First look at Pennywise's "friendly" guise from the new IT reboot

09.22.2016

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm actually excited about the IT reboot. Don't get me wrong, Tim Curry fucking killed it as Pennywise in the original adaptation of Stephen King's novel, but after revisiting it recently, the rest doesn't quite hold up. Not a terrible movie by any stretch (and again, Curry is great, as always), but it's definitely not something that couldn't be improved upon.

Which brings us to the new reboot coming out next year, directed by Andrés Muschietti (MAMA) and starring Bill Skarsgård as the new Pennywise. Now, the new design of Pennywise has been...divided to say the least. I really like it, but I can understand others being more hesitant or dismissive. One of the chief complaints is that it looked too automatically scary, and that one of the reasons Pennywise chooses his guise is to trick and lure children.

Well, filming has wrapped, and one of the producers of the film sent an Instagram photo of a Pennywise figurine. And it seems to be our first look at the "friendly" guise the Pennywise clown takes:

Look, if you have coulrophobia, nothing's going to change your mind on the guy. But as you can see here, it definitely shows that the make-up can allow Pennywise to look goofy if need be, which would help with him luring and killing children (so...yay?). The question is, do kids still find clowns funny, period?

Like I said, I'm on board either way. But what about you guys? And what Stephen King movie would you most like to see remade (personally, a more competent MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE could be sweet)?

IT will be released to theaters September 8th, 2017.

Extra Tidbit: Will Poulter (WE'RE THE MILLERS) was originally cast as Pennywise, but was replaced when directors changed.

The problem with this is that it still looks like a killer clown. Why the orginal It scared me was because he looked like a legit clown you have for your kids birthday parties and that's what was scary. Not a clown that looks like someone is doing one of those killer clown scare pranks on YouTube. I was excited to see Pennywise friendly guise because I was like yes he will have a normal clown look but it still looks just as much as a killer clown than is other look.

Clowns scare me

Clowns scare me differently than other people because these "killer clown" get ups never scare me but the average every day legit clowns do scare me.

That forehead... I just can't...

The costume looks horrible. The original is very overrated and doesn't hold up well, but I never thought the only thing they would take away from it would be Tim Curry's bald cap and giant forehead (but multiply it by 10 since this is a remake after all)

Looks good

I have liked what they have shown us so far. I want this to be good! I like the old movie enough even though it is cheesy.

Curry was the only redeeming part of the original IT and it's a bummer his performance was wasted on such a poor adaptation.

I'm not sold on this new Pennywise, it's very polished, and I also have to erase from my mind that in another world we may have received the Cary Fukunaga adaptation that no doubt would have been fantastic.

We will see.

Agreed. I want to he excited but I can almost guarantee that it would be better than what could have been. I have liked what has been released so far. Hopefully it's the same quality as The Conjuring was and not just a quick cash grab and low budget run of the mill horror we always get.

Word on the Fukunaga script is that he had written some scenes with Henry Bowers performing beastiality. The studio said no to these, and he walked away.

The good news is, they are still using his script sans those parts. And they hired Chung-Hoon Chung to be DOP, who arguably creates even more beautiful cinematography than Fukunaga.

Curry was obviously the best about that movie. Of course, they did have limitations since it was on ABC.
I do think Part 1 was still pretty decent, though. They took 3 actors known for being on sitcoms, and made them the stars of a horror movie (albeit a made for tv horror movie). That intrigued me big time back then. I was only a sophomore in college, but hadn't seen many actors make that transition. Now..comedians turning in serious roles is a bit more common. I dunno. Maybe I'm just

This is Great But....

Can anyone confirm if this is going to be a two parter? I'm going to be pissed if there is no adult version

I can't confirm it. But, I have read a few articles over the course of the past few months that have indicated it will have 2 parts. The one that just wrapped, being referenced as Part 1.
Here's one article, with a title that should be rather reassuring

From everything I've read it sounds like they're waiting on the box office from part 1, as long as its solid part 2 will get going very quickly.

luke319 That's what I figured! I don't see how this doesn't recoup and make money based on a relatively low budget and release date.
