Laugh along with the first full trailer for Dear White People

07.22.2014

We shared the first teaser trailer for DEAR WHITE PEOPLE last month which nearly split our readers judging by the comments. The upcoming indie film is a racially charged that showcases a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor that should be taken into account first before judging the movie. The full trailer has arrived and it’s full of well-done racial humor and satire; that was definitely not an easy task to accomplish.

The film was written and directed by Justin Simien who makes his feature debut and follows the stories of four black students at an Ivy League college where a riot breaks out over a popular "African American" themed party thrown by white students. It’s said to be based on Simien's own experiences at a predominately white university.

DEAR WHITE PEOPLE stars Tyler James Williams (Everybody Hates Chris, Peeples), Tessa Thompson (For Colored Girls, Veronica Mars), Teyonah Parris (Mad Men, They Came Together), Brandon P. Bell (Hollywood Heights), Kyle Gallner (A Nightmare on Elm Street, CBGB), Malcolm Barrett (The Hurt Locker), Brittany Curran (Chicago Fire), Marque Richardson (“The Newsroom”) and Dennis Haysbert (24, Far From Heaven).

What did you think of the trailer? Will you be finding this one upon release?

DEAR WHITE PEOPLE opens October 17th, 2014.

That looked a little preachy for my taste

but I'm willing to give it a shot. I love Dave Chapelle's comedy and he's politically charged so this shouldn't be too much of a stretch.

The premise and some of the shots seem great. But I hope it hits harder than the terribly obvious surface level jokes of "your one black friend Tyrone the weed dealer" and an Afro wig. The Mumford and Sons line is funny, but a lot of this looks like a terrible, lazy White Chicks/ all those Epic Movie spoofs humor. Don't Be A Menace TSCWDJITH (wow...) was edgier than a lot of this trailer (black people walking into the Chinese grocery store and the door saying "nigger" like a bell), and of

Don't Be A Menace TSCWDJITH (wow...) was edgier than a lot of this trailer (black people walking into the Chinese grocery store and the door saying "nigger" like a bell), and of course, the great Chapelle Show. Hopefully they are just mainstreaming the trailer to get a wider audience, bc I think this has potential - I mean, that last "Mexicans" line isn't even really offensive or politically incorrect.

Also, from the south, there is a certain demographic of black people that is absolutely not represented in the trailer of this film - I wonder how and if they will be portrayed - as I know their behavior really bothers most of my black friends. Hopefully this is an updated, funny do the right thing

Looks terrific.

There need to be more movie's like this that, what ever they are saying, aren't afraid of political correctness and are willing to have an honest conversation about race relations. If you like this look up Aaron McGruder he's great.

This is suppose too be a comedy? The trailer makes it look more like a lecture.

I'd rather laugh about it than fight about it. I'll get jiggy with it or whatever the white kids say these days.

not from a movie
it's Julia Anderson (or Julia Benson) from Masters of Horror episode: "Right to Die"
