In a recent interview, director John Landis has confirmed his long-gestating plans for a 3D release of Michael Jackson’s THRILLER is now in the works. While Jackson passed away in 2009, his popularity remains intact thanks to the release of two albums and the very successful documentary THIS IS IT. We don’t know for sure just how we might see the 3D video, but Landis hinted at a Blu-ray and possibly theatrical release.
The project was held up for “many years” Landis said. There was a dispute with Jackson's estate but he says "we settled and they paid me finally … so actually there is something happening with Thriller”.
The report also has a source close the family saying:
"It is going to reappear in a highly polished and three-dimensional way that is very exciting on the big screen, the iconic video has never been released on Blu-Ray or seen in cinemas and 3-D, and that was always a vision Michael had.”
The video landed in 1983 and cost an astounding $500,000 – more than 10 times the average cost of a video then. It was 14 minutes long and paved the way for “music video events” for years to come. It’s still the only music video to be inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. So needless to say, the video is important to a lot of people and might be worthy for a special release.
THRILLER is expected to hit theaters or Blu-ray next year. Would you want to see THRILLER in 3D?
