Michael Keaton thinks the ship has sailed regarding a Beetlejuice sequel

Beetlejuice 2 Michael Keaton

It's been nearly thirty years (really? holy shit) since Michael Keaton first brought Betelgeuse to life in the Tim Burton film and rumours of a sequel have been circling for almost as long. In the last couple of years that sequel talk has become much more serious with Seth Grahame-Smith working on a screenplay and both Winona Ryder and Tim Burton seemingly confirming that it would be happening. Michael Keaton has previously said that as long as Burton was involved, it'd be "very hard" for Keaton not to be involved as well.

Flash forward to the present day and Michael Keaton has once again been asked about BEETLEJUICE 2, but he's heard absolutely nothing about the project and says that "it's possible that ship has sailed." That's not to say that it won't happen and that Keaton doesn't want to be involved if it does, but he's naturally cautious about returning to that well and coming up short.

The only way to do it is to do it right. So much of it was improvised and so much was beautifully handmade by the artist that is Tim Burton. If you can’t get close to that, you leave it alone. There are certain movies that are like Indian burial grounds. You never ride over them. Bad s— happens if you cross that. You don’t touch certain things. They are sacred.

Michael Keaton will next be seen in THE FOUNDER in which he plays Ray Kroc, an Illinois salesman who maneuvers himself into a position to take control of the McDonalds fast-food empire. THE FOUNDER will be released on December 16, 2016 and then our next dose of Keaton comes with SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING on July 7, 2017 where he will be playing the Vulture.

Beetlejuice, if I had one movie from my childhood that really informed who I am, that I love despite its flaws, and that, if a sequel were to be done, I'd want it done right, this is it. I absolutely believe Keaton could still play the part. It's everyone else who aged out. And I think we've already got something much better, and that's Michael Keaton making movies again.

Oh if only...

The rights holders to Ghostbusters were as smart as Mr. Keaton

Keaton knows what's up, yo!
I agree completely.

It's actually a good idea if they can get Tim Burton and Michael Keaton back for the movie, especially Tim Burton. The guy has done too many movies with Johnny Depp. He should come back to his artistic-inspired movies like Tim Burton and let his imagination runs wild once again.

The nostalgia sequel idea has been tested and has failed at every turn

Thank you Michael Keaton for recognizing not to mess with "sacred ground." I was intrigued by Dumb and Dumber To and Zoolander 2 and sort of with Independence Day Resurgence only to feel betrayed by the shitty products that came out each time. If there was no sequel in the first decade following the movie, there was probably a reason and unless there has been some miracle stroke of ingenious creativity, leave these movies alone. Bad Santa 2 will try this again at Christmas time so here's to

With Burton releasing nothing but garbage the past 10+ years, this isn't a bad thing

Seeing as how most sequels that should have come sooner have flopped lately (2lander, Anchorman 2, Dumb and Dumber To, etc...) and Burtons track record crumbling with his own flops like Alice, Wonka and Dark Shadows, I don't really want to see a shitty Beetlejuice movie.

Last we heard the writer was a talentless hack who was responsible for writing most of Burtons flops. It's no surprise that Keaton has turned down many drafts.

100% Agree!

Well said, Mr. Keaton! There are a lot of great movies that should be left alone. With all of the reboots and the too-little, too-late sequel I saw last month, I hope studios leave Beetlejuice alone. I think it would be very difficult to recreate the tone of the original after all this time.
