Ride into action in this new trailer for The Lone Ranger with Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp

May. 21, 2013by: Paul Shirey

It seems like THE LONE RANGER has got an uphill climb to win audiences over, as it faces off against the ruling comic book genre, animated kid's films, and high-concept comedies of the summer. The western genre has been a tough sell for a while and even though THE LONE RANGER has some deep roots in American culture, it may not be enough for modern audiences. However, I have faith that this can be a hit for as long as Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, and director Gore Verbinski deliver a solid, rousing, and kick-ass flick. The last collaboration between Depp and Verbinksi wasn't projected to be much of a hit either and look how that turned out. Today, we have a new trailer for the film, which shows off some new footage, while building upon what we've already seen.

Take a look:

As a kid, I loved the '80's movie THE LEGEND OF THE LONE RANGER and it firmly embedded the lore of the character in my psyche. It's a fun, almost mystical approach to the western genre and builds on many of the heroic tropes we've come to know in other genres. I have no doubt that Bruckheimer and the team behind this have put forth their best effort and it's my hope that it shows onscreen. I'll be there to find out.

THE LONE RANGER, directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, James Badge Dale, Barry Pepper, and Ruth Wilson rides off into the sunset on July 3, 2013.

...the production design is amazing. I'm sure William Fichtner will be a treat. Gore Verbinski is talented. That said this movie looks like something I'll check out in a few years if it comes on TV.

I think the film looks like a good time. Like someone said below in their posts, the $10 won't break me or the two hours I spend at the theater. I'll be pulling for this one to do well.

Theme Music?

So, are they at least going to use "The William Tell Overture" in the film itself? You know... the actually THEME SONG for the Lone Ranger? They haven't used it in the trailers at all and I hope this isn't Bruckheimer's way of nixing something classic and nostalgic for something NEW, HIP AND FRESH! The theme music is even FREE and public domain, so....

The special effects

Gore Verbinski can sure plan out massive action sequences. I just want to "feel" the weight and power of the locomotive like I did when the 18-wheeler flipped in The Dark Knight.

We can't get a Bioshock movie made but this gets greenlit...Still doesn't look as bad as Jonah Hex was.

this one's gonna hurt

considering Hollywood likes to say a movie has to double its budget to break even, this film is going to have a tough time getting off the ground. they want to evoke that Black Pearl magic but even Pirates 2 thru 4 failed to recapture that. i cant say for sure, but my gut is telling me this wont make it as a series.

I think this movie looks good. But whatever issues there might be with the marketing I'd chalk up to how they're constructing this as a franchise for Depp more than a straight-up Lone Ranger movie. But the trailers are focusing more and more on the masked man. Either way, it's an uphill battle with the ridiculous budget.

I don't know, I'm still getting Cowboys & Aliens/John Carter vibes from the trailers. Those two aren't bad films per se, but they definitely weren't as fun as they could have been and did feel kinda bloated. It doesn't seem likely that this will spawn a franchise, just as the aforementioned two films didn't, but we shall have to see.
