Timur Bekmambetov brings the epic in the first trailer for Ben-Hur

03.16.2016

Director Timur Bekmambetov (ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER, WANTED) brings to life the classic tale of a falsely accused nobleman who survives years of slavery to take vengeance on his best friend who betrayed him. That's right! We're talking maritime battles, chariot races and a slice of Jesus! It's BEN-HUR! Check out the first trailer below!

Like most people, I had very little faith going into this thing. Granted, the end result doesn't look like anything special, but it doesn't look NEARLY as bad as I thought it would. The Charlton Heston classic is there for people who want it, and I'm sure there's going to be a whole group of people who see this new one that aren't familiar with the original. If Bekmambetov can inject some fun into this sword and sandal epic, I think we'll have a decent time come this August.

BEN-HUR will open in theaters on August 12, 2016.

So...it's the cliff note version of Ben-Hur....What's the point of this????

This is the Gladiator version of Ben-Hur. However, unlike Ben-Hur and Gladiator, this comes without a deep character portrayal, as well as a strong focus on the film's characters. If this was not Ben-Hur, I would be saying, "The film looks pretty good". However, why the Hell would I watch a remake of Ben-Hur which focuses on only skimming the surface of the original's key story elements and instead focus heavily on the two big action scenes of the original? Which in the original, these two scene were merely 25 to 30 minutes of the overall 224 minute epic. I'd rather watch the original chariot race sequence where those are real people underneath the stampeding horses. The action, the visuals, and outstanding stunt work of the 1959 original still hold up heavily 57 years later!

ROFL It always boils down to a car chase. WOW have not seen the original Ben Hur in ages but I don't think the point of the whole movie was to get into a race. But got to love RastaFreeman!

Well, it doesn't look bad. But looking at the trailer, I can't help but wonder how 1959 Ben-Hur with Charlton Heston looks much much more realistic and epic than this new one, especially the chariot race scene. This new one is just full of CGI. It's going to end up like Gods of Egypt. Trust me.

Count me in. Do I wish it was a different title/ story? Absolutely. But I love sword and sandals epics and this one doesn't look half bad imo. It will never live up to the originally but I think it will be cool.

It breaks the suspension of disbelief in pre-electricity era films, when the facial hair of protagonists look like they've been groomed with a Norelco. Just sayin.

Looks like they're trying to keep the remake of one of the classic religious picture from being a religious picture.

A cast of thousands...

Whatever your opinion of the original, you cannot help but be impressed by the chariot race knowing that it is real and not CGI. Amazing!

Made for TV???

Why does this look like an HBO movie and not something that would be released in theaters. It just looks very generic and boring. I'm not a huge fan of the original either, but at least I can appreciate the original telling such a huge story and not forcing itself to be a generic action flick.

So I was watching the '59 masterpiece a couple of days back and I couldn't stop praising it. Little did I know the cancer Timur and Paramount had in store.
This is appalling. What next? Lawrence of Arabia remake? Casablanca too? God save us...

Let's not forget, Godfather, 2001, Gone with the Wind, and god knows what else they think they can get away with if they think this is acceptable.

Anyone else getting a "Gladiator" if directed by Michael Bay vibe from this trailer?

More of a "The Fast & The Furious: Jerusalem Drift," personally. But I like where you're coming from, too.

Definitely not as bad as I anticipated, but nothing here has me on the edge thinking its a great reinvention. One good thing is that they didn't have to kill over 100 horses this time to make it look real.
