Weekend Box Office Report: April 6-8, 2018

A Quiet Place makes box office noise!

The hushed horror-thriller A QUIET PLACE caused a ruckus this weekend, opening on top at the box office with an estimated $50 million!

Actor John Krasinski directed himself and wife Emily Blunt in the PG-13 fright film, which cost a reported $17 million. The tense tale of a family trying to avoid sound-hunting creatures lured an additional $21 million overseas for a $71 million worldwide opening.

The silent scare tactics had the best domestic debut for an original horror movie since the $50.7 million start of M. Night Shyamalan's THE VILLAGE back in 2004 (the filmmaker's recent SPLIT opened with $40 million last year).

Critics were enthusiastic about being so effectively terrified by mysterious monsters, giving the movie a 97% average on Rotten Tomatoes. You can sneak over to the JoBlo review HERE.

The virtual-reality fantasy READY PLAYER ONE shifted to second place with $25 million, lagging by 40% from its number-one opening last weekend for a ten-day domestic total of $96.9 million. Director Steven Spielberg's $175 million adaptation of Ernest Cline's nostalgic sci-fi novel now has a worldwide total of $391 million.

The new R-rated comedy BLOCKERS opened in third place with $21.4 million.

The Seth Rogen-produced movie, featuring John Cena and Leslie Mann as parents attempting to thwart Prom night sex, cost a reported $21 million. It made an extra $10.7 million from international audiences for a $32.1 million worldwide weekend.

Most critics were amused by the fornication-prevention operation, giving the movie an average of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can party with the JoBlo review right HERE.

In fourth place, BLACK PANTHER continued its remarkable performance with $8.4 million on its eighth weekend (now a full two months in the top half of the chart).

With a current domestic total of $665.3 million, Marvel's Wakandan warrior has passed both JURASSIC WORLD ($652 million) and TITANIC ($659 million) to become the third-highest grossing picture in domestic history.

Director Ryan Coogler's immensely popular tale of tribal rivalry and superheroics has also collected $1.29 billion worldwide, surpassing Disney's FROZEN to make it the tenth-biggest global release ever.

Religious drama I CAN ONLY IMAGINE was in fifth place with $8.3 million, taking it to $69 million after four weekends in release (on a $7 million reported cost).

The R-rated revenge thriller TYLER PERRY'S ACRIMONY followed in sixth with $8 million, a 53% drop from its opening last weekend for a ten-day domestic total of $31.3 million.

Opening in seventh place was the new fact-based drama CHAPPAQUIDDICK with $6.2 million.

Focusing on the 1969 investigation of Senator Ted Kennedy's car crash that killed his campaign specialist, the PG-13 account received an 80% average from critics on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).

Animated sequel SHERLOCK GNOMES was in eighth with $5.6 million for a $33.8 million domestic total, and kaiju-fighting follow-up PACIFIC RIM UPRISING was in ninth with $4.9 million as it clomped to $267 million worldwide.

Filmmaker Wes Anderson's stop-motion hounds jumped onto the list in tenth as ISLE OF DOGS retrieved $4.6 million after expanding to 554 locations. The PG-13 animated feature has $12 million domestic before it continues to roam further nationwide next weekend.

Outside the chart, sci-fi fantasy A WRINKLE IN TIME departed with videogame adaptation TOMB RAIDER, teen drama LOVE, SIMON and biblical story PAUL, APOSTLE OF CHRIST.

The new inspirational true volleyball drama THE MIRACLE SEASON couldn't spike into the Top 10, opening with $4.1 million on 1700 screens. In limited release, the Joaquin Phoenix vigilante thriller YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE hammered its way to a strong start with a $43k per-screen average.

Next weekend plays a deadly game of TRUTH OR DARE, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's arcade adaptation RAMPAGE pounds into theaters, and tennis greats face off in BORG VS. MCENROE.
