Tobe Hooper's THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE may be well over forty years old at this point, but the film has lost none of its gritty impact. Like many of its contemporaries, THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE also spawned many sequels which attempted, with varying degrees of success, to emulate the feeling of the 1974 film.

According to Bloody Disgusting, a new film in the franchise is in the works with Fede Álverez, director of DON'T BREATHE and EVIL DEAD, set to produce for Legendary Entertainment. Kim Henkel, who wrote and produced the original film in addition to directing TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE NEXT GENERATION, is also attached to the project. Now here's the interesting bit; Bloody Disgusting says that they're hoping to make this a direct sequel to the original film, similar to what was recently done with David Gordon Green's HALLOWEEN. If that sounds familiar to you, that's because they've already tried this once before with TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D, you know, the one starring Alexandra "Do your thing, cuz" Daddario. Unfortunately, Álverez isn't looking to direct the project at this time and the search is on for someone else to take the helm.

The approach of ignoring all of the sequels and focusing on the original certainly worked well with HALLOWEEN, so Legendary must be hoping for a little of that same magic, although Bloody Disgusting notes that these plans aren't set in stone. The most recent film in the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE franchise was LEATHERFACE, a prequel which told the origin of its title character, because there's nothing scarier than completely explaining your villain.
