Last Updated on July 30, 2021

When thinking about the new movie SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK, and all the music that could accompany all the nightmarish figures, singer Lana Del Rey might not be the first person you expect to hear over the terror. But the new teaser for the upcoming horror flick provides a pairing you didn’t think would work so well, featuring ghosts and twisted figures hitting the screen as Del Rey’s new cover of Donovan’s 1966 classic, “Season of the Witch,” plays ominously in the background.

If your first thought is “Why?” then the answer is simple: Producer Guillermo del Toro is a big fan of her work. The filmmaker spoke put out a statement explaining why he went to Del Rey for the new take on the classic song. “I have admired Lana’s music for a while now and felt in my gut that she would run with ‘Season of the Witch’ – that she would use her alchemy to transform it,  he said (via Variety).

Going back to the intro, the song may not have the most obvious reason for existing when paired with the movie, but Del Rey's dreamy vocals lend a dark, haunted air to the creepy visuals. Not to mention the movie takes place in 1968, and the original song came out in 1966, so it makes sense to evoke some of the essences of the era and to pay homage with a new take on the material.

SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK is in theaters August 9.
