The horror-drama series THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE managed to break through the crowed Netflix slate and stand out as one of the most-talked-about, most compelling — and easily the scariest — shows of the year. Not only is there a second season on the way for 2020, but in a bit of exciting news, we’ve learned that an Extended Director’s Cut of the terrifying series will be hitting Blu-ray in what could be the very near future.

Production company Amblin, who helped bring the series to life, tweeted out a few days ago that the extended version was available to pre-order now on Amazon – currently at the price of $39.99. When Bloody-Disgusting caught wind of the release, director Mike Flanagan confirmed the news on social media:

“Well this news got out there a LITTLE earlier than we wanted… but yes, it’s true! More details to come, but it was a blast restoring several episodes to their original form. Hope you all enjoy!” he wrote.

This news is a bit surprising, mostly because when Netflix does put out Blu-ray versions of their more popular series (HOUSE OF CARDS, DAREDEVIL) they don’t often make a splash. But with this Blu-ray release, they’re offering new content that will compel fans to go out and buy it, all to see how these new scenes will affect what episodes. It also begs the question of how much material did Flanagan cut in order to get the episodes down to the perfect length both for structure and, perhaps, to meet what must be some specific episode guidelines from the streaming service. Currently, there's no release date for the Blu-ray, but now with word going around it may not be much longer before details start to emerge.

The series was released on Netflix last year to rave reviews, praising the cast, Flanagan's direction of every episode, the emotional core and, of course, the fact it was scary as f**k. Adapted from the story of the same name by Shirley Jackson, which centered on the lives of the Crain family as they grew up and only somewhat moved on from the terrors they experienced living in a huge home as children. There only ever needed to be one season of the show, but after the success of it a sequel season was greenlit as part of a burgeoning anthology series, and THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR is set for next year.

Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, Elizabeth Reaser, Kate Siegel, Victoria Pedretti, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen and more starred in the first season, and the latter two are set to come back for season two as new characters.
