Witness the origin of an iconic killer in the new trailer for Leatherface

Grab an apron, a butcher's mallet, a chainsaw, and your favorite mask made out of human flesh, because LEATHERFACE is back, again! For the newest chapter of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE saga, French filmmaking duo Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo will be taking us back to where it all began, and explaining away the origin of one of horror's most legendary killers.

Here's a look at the new trailer:

As you might have already guessed, LEATHERFACE will serve as a prequel to the 1974 original directed by Toby Hooper. With a script written by Seth M. Sherwood, stars Stephen Dorff, Vanessa Grasse, Sam Strike, and Lily Taylor will each play a part in the events that helped shape the deranged and handicapped psychopath. As previously reported, principal photography has taken place back in May and June of 2015, with an exclusive release via DirecTV scheduled for September 21, 2017. Following the DirecTV debut will be a theatrical presentation which is scheduled for an October 20th release.

So, what do you think? Personally, I'm not really in the business of having my villains extensively explored and explained. Sometimes, it works out for the better, and we're given a new angle to the lore that helps the story to become larger than it already is. Other times though, revealing too much about a villain's motivations or upbringing can almost ruin the mystique and crippled functioning of their black hearts. Here's hoping that LEATHERFACE is something that casual fans of the character can enjoy, and perhaps even more for those who adore the chainsaw-wielding farm boy with a face that only a mother could love.

LEATHERFACE will make its debut on DirecTV beginning on September 21, 2017, and in theaters on October 20th.

Extra Tidbit: I wonder if Leatherface will go to space when the franchise hits its 10th installment?
