Zola trailer: A stranger than fiction saga comes to life on the big screen

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

A24 has released the trailer for Zola, which made some waves during last year's Sundance Festival, and this stranger than fiction saga looks like it will make for an intriguing moviegoing experience.

Zola is a biographical comedy-drama that is directed by Janicza Bravo who also serves as a screenwriter alongside Jeremy O. Harris. The film is based on an infamous 148-tweet Twitter thread in which Zola (Taylour Paige) meets a sex worker named Stefani (Riley Keough) at a restaurant where Zola waitresses and the two immediately bond over pole dancing. Only a day after numbers are exchanged, Stefani invites Zola on a cross-country road trip, where the goal is making money hand over fist by dancing in Florida strip clubs. Zola agrees to go but soon she is trapped in the craziest, most unexpected trip of her life, partaking in a wild two-day trip with Stefani, her boyfriend Derek (Nicholas Braun), and Stefani's violent pimp, X (Colman Domingo).

The film made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2020, and our very own Chris Bumbray had a chance to review the film last year. He seemed to think that the film could end up being a bit divisive due to its subject matter but could also be viewed as a masterpiece by some. Judging from the plot description alone, this seems like a film that is right up A24's alley and, if anything, it should make for a truly unique experience to watch.
