Sounds like Sly Stallone's THE EXPENDABLES just sacrificed a small slice of coolness.

AICN says that scheduling shifts on the all-star action flick have caused Forest Whitaker to withdraw from the project. And apparently he's been replaced by rapper / actor / product pitchman / videogame character Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson.

Whitaker was to play a federal agent (apparently teamed with a distractingly hot partner, a badge now worn by Charisma Carpenter) on the hunt for Sly and his merry band of mercenaries.

I'm not sure an Oscar winner for the guy behind the unavoidable hip-hop hit "In da Club" is a fair trade off, but maybe Mr. Cent showed Sly something special to get the part. At least I know Jackson can act -- he has convincingly scowled or seemed perplexed in all his movie roles I've seen.

UPDATE - Stallone himself has candidly (and persuasively) addressed the recasting, via the boards at StalloneZone: "No one thought Dolph Lundgren was a good choice for ROCKY or Mr. T. for Rocky III. Carl Weathers was an afterthought when Ken Norton fell out." More right here. In Sly we trust.

Regret to inform you, MrCatchaTemper. Never really a fan of Tupac. So I don't know, nor care, about what roles in film he did. Regardless, 50 is still a joke, imo. I don't care who the rapper/ 'gangsta' is. It makes no sense to deprave cops, but yet, accept a role to depict one.

If ya dont like 50 cent that much, dont go see the movie. Its that simple.

@oakraidr ya look dumb saying shit bout 50 like that. its a fucking acting role.....If we go back a few yrs...tupac played a cop in a movie called gang related....who turned out to be a snitch aswell. Two things tupac was against.....

Tupac is the better actor out of the two but thats beside...

I agree with those who think Carl Weathers would be a great choice. Others though would be Lawrence Fishburne, Samuel L. Jackson, Wesley Snipes, Mos Def (he's actually an excellent actor), Ving Rhames, maybe even Michael Clark Duncan, etc. I have the utmost respect for Sly and I do trust him, but I just can't understand for the life of me why he picked "Fitty." Maybe he blew him away with one h...

At least get a recognizable action actor like as RazGriz pointed out, Carl Wethers. I don't know if he's doing much and he'd have been a great nod to action fans in general.

I'm not a fan of his music but maybe the guy can play a serious role. I'd trust Stallone to make the right call considering this is his movie unless the decision was made with some outside pressure.

Forest Whitaker would have been awesome but the new casting won't steer me from seeing this on opening weekend.

Yeah there were PLENTY of other black actors he could have chosen, but I'll give 50 a chance. NO I don't care for his whack music, but this will in NO way deter me from seeing this film.

As for you clowns dissing music you obviously don't listen to, you can all eat one. I grew up on true hip-hop and do listen to hip-hop and rap. To each his own, but if you're gonna diss it, have some legitimate reason behind it and not make close-minded remarks. You can also keep your traps closed about my tunnel vision. I listen to just about every genre of music and used to co-host a Heavy Metal show when I did radio. However, that's cool. You dish it, you better be able to take it. So you [link] rose-wanna be goth kids shopping at 'Not Gothic' can eat one. Listen to some real music for Petey's sake.

My excitement for this movie and my support of Sly haven't wavered at all, but this is definitely a huge disappointment.

Can't believe they traded Forest "Ghost Dog" Whitaker for 50 Cent! I can't see 50 play a federal agent, since you would need to know how to read..they could've found someone better..very disappointing.

I knew the Expendables was too good to be true. Better to be disappointed now than a year from now!

I know I'm not as stoked for this movie as some people but this is just disappointing any way you look at it.

I mean if Whitaker has to drop out then try (again) to get Snipes to fill in for him, if you can't get him go for Ving Rhames or Lawrence Fishburne or Michael Jai White or Michael Clarke Duncan or FREAKIN' ANYBODY BUT 50 CENT.
