If you clicked around some of your favorite fansites this morning, you undoubtedly came across a few "news" stories that proved themselves to be the now-customary April Fools Day gags.

One particular item that was NOT a joke, however, was that an early version of next month's big-budget comic book flick X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE had found its way online to various video hosting and torrent tracking sites. Not previews or studio-sanctioned clips -- a workprint of the film in its entirety.

Fox has since issued a response: "Last night, a stolen, incomplete and early version of X-Men Origins: Wolverine was posted illegally on websites. It was without many effects and had missing scenes and temporary sound and music. We immediately contacted the appropriate legal authorities and had it removed. We forensically mark our content so we can identify sources that make it available or download it. The source of the initial leak and any subsequent postings will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law - the courts have handed down significant criminal sentences for such acts and the last person who committed such a crime is still in jail. The FBI and the MPAA also are actively investigating this crime. We are encouraged by the support of fansites condemning piracy and this illegal posting and pointing out that such theft undermines the enormous efforts of the filmmakers and actors, and above all, hurts the fans of the film."

Given the current nature of the internets, it's virtually impossible to prevent the movie's proliferation at this point -- you can't put the shit back in the goose, as my old man used to say. The finished movie hits screens on May 1st, but whether this incident will have a noticeable impact on the box office is now the question.

This type of occurrence is not unprecedented -- a workprint leak of HOSTEL 2 was partially blamed for that sequel's relatively weak tally, but similar situations didn't prove detrimental to the box office earnings of TAKEN, AMERICAN GANGSTER or the HALLOWEEN remake.

While there will always be a percentage of internetizens who actively seek pirated/bootleg/camera copies of movies, it's probably safe to say that the average consumer still prefers the theater experience, judging by the massive amounts of cash plunked down at multiplexes so far in 2009. A high-profile flick like WOLVERINE may not have much to worry about -- after all, he's resilient and full of adamantium.

Extra Tidbit: One has to wonder if this was someone's payback at Fox honcho Tom Rothman and his supposed disdain for the X-MEN franchise and/or its fanbase... but it's certainly a pisser for star (and producer) Hugh Jackman, who seems like a great dude.

i thought it wasnt terrible, the biggest issue of course is Deadpool, had they just made him some unnamed super mutant i dont think anyone would have a problem. but they really screwed up a fan favorite. other than that i thought it was pretty decent, i'm still gonna check it out in theaters to see it all put together properly with the special effects.

Now that i think about it ...

I only had two problems with the movie. My first problem was the underdeveloped Sabertooth, and my other problem was the whole "Deadpool being a super mutant thing". Other than those two gripes, I think the movie was great. It had a few flaws, but you can't hate on a movie because they messed up one character.

Yet nobody complained about them "messing up" Two Face. If Wolverine was a truly terrible movie, then I could understand people hating on it, but the movie wasn't terrible. The movie was actually pretty good (not great).

The studios need to simply put out better movies. As presentation gets better the actual content of the movies gets worse. With Digital Presentation, IMAX, 3D, stadium seating, it's funny that they just can't make more original movies that are worth the enormous price that it costs these days! It's all remakes, re-imagining, reboots, sequels, prequels, digital cartoons, based on whatever new bo...

Half of them fail to please the masses, and only a small fraction make just a bit more than their ridiculous sized budgets. Hollywood needs the 70s again.

inconsistancies with itself? How about the butchery of Peter
Petrelli?.... oh wade, DEADpool. They made him Baraka? WTF.
And what business did he have being the final battle? The
creation of the supposed "main villian" Sabretooth lacked
any depth, then proceeded to have wolverine fight someone
else at the end, which, btw, becomes less badass with swords
coming out of his hand. All that stuff he did in the beginning
with the repelling bullets... ya think that could happen with
the limited movement those blades had at the end? Oh and don't
forget the great Remy, who landed his accent spot on.
(sarcasm, for those who actually believe that)

Lets not forget the biggest flaw here - the very end. The ending
of this movie made the entire journey of the main character mean
ABSOLUTELY nothing. This movie will only have value when sitting
next to its sequel on the shelf- which hopefully will be done by
a better storyteller.

Not the worst movie. Not as bad as X3, sure, but that's
not saying much. Maybe better than Xmen 1. It's hard to
place this on a scale really, though I wouldn't dare give
it anything over a 3 out of 5 - thats for someone who reads
comics from time to time. Maybe for the casual viewer a 3.5
out of 5. MAYBE.

I watched it and giggled at the unfinished effects. It was pretty good and will wait until they have $5 movie days for it. Kinda sucked how they "handled" the Deadpool character. Would of liked it more if weapon XI have more screen time. At least we got a awesome cameo at the end. ;]

Even though most people who downloaded, will see it in theaters, most people won't because of the way they butchered Deadpool.. Even a little bad word of mouth will hurt. Look at Watchmen, which was a great movie, but word of slong got around, and killed sales...

I liked this movie, it will be a hit. A lot of action and I concur that Ryan Reynolds portrayal of Deadpool was awesome, and I wanted to see more of that character. Liev may not have fit the Sabretooth look as good as Tyler Mane, but Liev did a hell of a job in that role. He was creepy, and downright wicked. You could see the tension and hatred between Wolverine and Sabretooth that was lackin...

Fuck all these people who say its shit. I watched it twice last night. It was better than I could have hoped for and thats without all the cg effects complete. Liev Schreiber was amazing as Sabertooth. Reynolds did good he just wasn't in the movie enough imo. I dont think this will hurt the films box office one bit.

Im tired of hearing about Hostel 2 being hurt by downloading. I went and saw it in theater..and hated it. So either the film sucked!

Watched the beta version just now. I must say the director really fucked it up, I demand it to be redone,keep Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, and recast everyone else. The I have seen sucked big time. Can't they find someone like Zack Snyder to do Wolverine.

This movie was gonna be bad regardless of whatever extra footage they added. Watching the workprint just confirmed it. I don't think any extra footage would have saved this movie. It was total shit from the beginning. This movie is one of the shittiest Marvel movies ever made.

I heard nothing but horror tales from the set. This movie has been pegged as troubled from the beginning.

I'm almost convinced that Fox let the workprint go in order to gauge fan response. Oh well, at least we got a decent XMen film in the first sequel. It's time to get somebody else behind that franchise.

Well, I just saw the workprint and I've got to say that no additional scenes, fixed effects, or added music will make it any better. Like everyone said, they totally destroyed Deadpool, who could have been wonderful. They meddled more with backstory that didn't need any more meddling. And aside from a few good action scenes it just wasn't very good. I give it a C-.

They Venomized Deadpool. When are they going to get [link] This reminds me of Die Hard. Didn't Reynolds come out and say how good it was a lil while back much like Willis did on AICN for Die Hard 4? It's good, it's a fitting chapter, blah blah blah. Then they turn around and kick us in the nuts. If Faux is listening, pulling the film, fix Deadpool. Have a Faux exec call up Nolan or the Fav and ask them how to translate characters without adding stupid studio shit to make it cool. "Hey, Fav, loved you in Swingers....how do I not screw up a comic property?" or even Snyder, "How do you take something good and make it so-so? (and I'm not referring to the squid)" or Raimi, "How do I take something iconic and change it just enough to piss off some fans but not all of them? And how should I deal with studio execs that want to cram as much crap into a flick as possible to make money."

Shame on you for what you did to Deadpool.

it was obvious gavin hood had no idea what he was doing...

the title sequences were hilariously bad ass well as the TEMP TRANSFORMERS MUSIC HAHAHAHA damn i feel sorry for ppl expecting a good or decent movie...

I was one of those people who were convinced that this movie was going to kick ass. I'm sorry to say that it didn't. I feel like if the movie came out two or three years ago (pre-dark knight/iron man) I may have enjoyed it more.

watched it a couple hours ago, it was okay. i was crackin up every time an unfinished special effect popped up on the screen. ill most likely still watch it in theaters just to see the finished product. the story wasn't all that and yes, the film's spin on deadpool sucked it big time.

Something has been telling me that this flick will be a C+ effort at best.

I've had that feeling since the beginning. Now, that I know more. I'm sticking to the grade.

The movie will make money, no doubt, but what they have done to DEADPOOL is going to hurt this film by word-of-mouth alone.

In the end, this will be warming my DVD shelves just like th...

I love this, i downloaded it and find it interesting to see a not fully finished movie. wires everywhere, not fully rendered guns and Sabertooth. i doubt this will hurt the box office though, but what do i care i refuse to go see a movie in a theater filled with retarded douchbags. been arrested to much as is.

This movie had a nice fan base until the news broke about what they did to Deadpool. Now it seems like a lot of fans could care less, or at least have tried to pretend not to care. When this movie is released it will do fairly well, but it's not going to be a hit with the fans.

In all my years of movie watching, I have noticed a high percentage of movies that don't suck make money. Coincidently, a high percentage of movies that do suck don't make money.

I guess the success of Wolverine will depend on the writer, director and actors not sucking.

So bootleg versions of "Taken" would've been DVD quality, because they were actually copies of an offical DVD... but still the movie has made and keeps making lots of money
