Fallout: the movie?

Considering how many Game of the Year lists it made, it's surprising there hasn't been more discussion about a movie based on the hit videogame FALLOUT 3.

Developer Bethesda may be giving some thought to the possibility, or at least taking precautionary measures. As Joystiq points out, the company recently filed trademarks for the brand as "motion picture films about a post-nuclear apocalyptic world," as well as "entertainment services in the nature of an on-going television program." Whether any studio or talent is actually involved or interested at this point remains unknown.

While it has a rich world and some groovy 50s retro designs, I'm not sure how well the game might translate to the screen given how much of its unfolding story is conditional on the multitude of individual decisions made by players (and besides, like sex and volleyball, it's more fun to be involved than watch).

But the remarkable expanse of FALLOUT 3 can't be argued -- I got it at Christmas and I'm still wandering the burned-out landscape of future Washington DC and its surrounding mutant-filled environs. And war... war never changes.

Source: Joystiq

Extra Tidbit: Bethesda was responsible for some of the earliest TERMINATOR games, including the acclaimed TERMINATOR: FUTURE SHOCK. Training ground for FALLOUT 3?

AWESOME
Fallout 3, Gears of War, and Bioshock all have great atmospheres and stories that have the potential to be made into a great movie. i beat all 3 and i can personally say that i really want these games to hit the big screen because i think they should not only be shared among the gamers but to everyone worldwide. i dont want the usual game-to-movie film like hitman (which wasnt HORRIBLE) but a f...

p.s. sucks that jackson cant help out with Halo :(

Heh, I wrote a proposal for a Fallout movie as part of a semester-long project I did in a college producing class. Course at the time, I had it based on the first two games, but a Washington D.C.-set Fallout movie would be cool too. Actually, they could make a crazily cool Fallout HBO series. The only real budget-breaker would be the mutants, depending on how they did them.

Finally a game I know something about
Aside from the fact that a whole host of movies inspired Fallout, and in turn many have come out since with that same desert post-apocolyptic world as a setting, this thing could be very filmable.

The important thing here is to remember to focus on just the very superficial aspects of the world, like vault dwellers, and '50s retro, and keep a cutthroat sense of humor.

Any movie based on the Fallout games won't be definitive, but if it treats the world as a cinematic entity, it could work out.

Shack: You guys trademarked the Fallout name for movies and television recently. Was that related to a specific project, or..?

Pete Hines: That's more part of, we spent a lot of time developing Fallout into something that is very hot. It has a lot of people's interest--

Shack: So you're just protecting it.

Pete Hines: --and we just want to be make sure that we're protecting what we created. And I can tell you, we've gotten a ton of interest about those kinds of things, not just with Fallout, but over the years. And it was just a, "Let's make sure that we're protecting what is ours and not letting somebody else do anything with it." So it's more of that, and it is not in response to any specific project or initiative or anything in particular.

I've been a fallout geek since the first one hit PC's back around 98 or so, and I can attest that there is a ridiculous amount of backstory that was only slightly touched on in F3. It's got almost as much history written out as the Star Wars expanded Universe. So the possibilities are endless really. It's got almost as much history written out as the Star Wars expanded Universe. So the possibilities are endless really. It could make a great TV series or movie series as long as it's true to all the ballin' lore. You could start over with new characters and story as long as it fits the world, really. Wouldn't have to be a direct adaptation at all, which might be better. The originals were like Mad Max, Good Bad and Ugly, and Blade Runner rolled into one. I say go for it, and with good talent attached.

i would love the idea of the movie happening, there was an interview done with bethesda, and they said they just want to trademark the name now before anyone else can do anything else with the name, yeah a movie or series could happen, but thats as much as was given in the interview

A Fallout movie might be cool, but filing trademarks under that category is too specific. For instance The Day After (1983).

Hmmm. I thought Terminator Salvation was a Fallout movie.

The game is fun, and as long as the movie keeps the same mean spirited humor then I'm all for it.

Get Liam Neeson for this. Yeah , I know he only voiced the dad in 3 and all that but I think he'd own the lead role if a Fallout movie was made.
