Duncan Jones speaks candidly about Warcraft's failure and a sequel

WARCRAFT didn't exactly break the mold of video games-turned-films, but it does have its audience (mostly in China). Still, the film hardly churned out the profits studios were hoping for, and director Duncan Jones acknowledges as much in a recent interview with Thrillist. It's a good read, for those interested, and while he doesn't come out and bash WARCRAFT or anything like that, he does take some time to acknowledge what he think went wrong, as well as the possibility of a director's cut and a sequel.

Duncan Jones regarding the imperfections of WARCRAFT:

Trying to make a movie like Warcraft, and trying to do it in a unique way... you get killed by a death of 1,000 cuts. Not just editing cuts. It's little changes that seem really innocuous. As a filmmaker the only way that I understand how to make a film is holistically. Every choice that I make, whether it is story or character or costume, all works together. When you make a little change it doesn't seem like a big deal. When you keep making those little changes, especially over three and a half years, suddenly you're basically spending all of your time trying to work out how to patch up what has been messed around with. Trust me, if anyone is frustrated about the pacing of the film and how that turned out, it's me. It's not because I didn't know what was happening, but as I said, death of 1,000 cuts.

On the possibility of a director's cut:

A lot of people ask me, "When is the director's cut coming out?" There will never be a director's cut. With a film like this, where there are so many visual effects, every concession that you make you lose those shots. They cease to exist because the effects work never gets done. Some of it's not even at that stage. You go through a writing stage right up to the deadline of shooting the thing. [You lose] ideas in the writing process. Then sets change for whatever reason and notes come in. You're changing things around a three-and-a-half-year process. You get these little changes which are constantly course-correcting you. So there is no possibility of there ever being a director's cut. It's purely in my head.

Whether or not he would make a sequel:

If there were an opportunity for us to make another film in the Warcraft universe I really feel like we did the hard work in the first movie as far as setting the table. I would love to capitalize on three and a half years of hard work and be able to have some fun in that world now that I've done the hard work. [So] who knows? Maybe I'm just being a masochist.

I can't say I was a fan of WARCRAFT, but I do admire Jones in trying to create something different than what we've seen in the likes of LORD OF THE RINGS and GAME OF THRONES. The film was a long and large endeavor, so it's hard to give Jones any grief for doing his best. Furthermore, I'm just as excited as ever to see his upcoming project, MUTE, which is said to take place in the same universe as MOON!

Duncan Jones' next film, MUTE, is currently in pre-production.

I think the movie would have benefitted in being a full cgi film than a live action movie with cgi characters. The orcs are very well done but the humans seem out of place.

It would have been perfect if filmed similar to how Avatar was filmed...

That High Fantasy style is suicide at the box office anyway.

Lord of The Rings and Game Of Thrones managed to pull it off by aiming for strong naturalistic feels. But it's tough to get right.

I actually agree with this... While it wasn't my cup of tea, I have to say it looked great and the director is still held in high regards (it will take a lot to tarnish the director of Moon). GB and SS were just so subpar, quickly thrown together and just boring most of the time.

Yep, 100% agree. Was Warcraft perfect?? Hell no, far from it. Some of the human characters were straight up out of cosplay bad, but you can tell they WANTED to tell this story, and make this movie.

Those other movies are just tacked on popular characters/franchises thrown together knowing all the plebs/fans will just go see it so they can see their favorite "whatever" on screen. No heart in either of those 2 shitbags of film.

I hoping for a sequel. Most of the good stories come after the set up. There's a great movie waiting to be made revolving around Thrall and Varian story.

If there is ever to be sequels or spin-offs they'll most undoubtedly be straight to video/DVD release with very poor special effects.

There will never be a theatrical sequel to a failed film like this.

Not a bad movie

I always judge a movie base on whether I would purchase it on Blu later. I thought the art production alone garnered a buy. I will def be picking this up when it comes out. Who knows, it might find more steam on Blu-Ray because its one of those movies you purchase just to see how bad ass your new t.v. is lol. I used to play Prometheus whenever I wanted to show off my flat screen; it will be Warcraft in the future.

Could open the doors to some interesting China-US film distributions

While the movie itself was kind of lame, this could be a cool opportunity to open doors within film relations between the US and China. Imagine making movies in the US and getting a distributor from China to market and put the film out in a global market. China is like the second largest source of ticket sales anyways. Then we could get some of their awesome movies (like all the cool/modern Jackie Chan movies that never made it overseas). They even have relationships with S. Korea who make some

It is a story that would work well in that Chinese Fantasy style.

Give it to a Chinese production company, aiming it at Asian Audiences first, and there's a buck to be made.

No directors cut

That's the sad thing about heavy digital effects movies, anything that didn't or wasn't going tomake the final cut probably didn't get the work needed to ever use that footage. Which is a shame really.
