Frank Miller talks about the start of Sin City and the Dark Knight

Aug. 20, 2014by:

Two days stand between SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR and it's audience. While it's been a hell of a wait for the follow-up to SIN CITY (2005), Frank Miller recently had a chat with Playboy reminding us that getting a SIN CITY movie at all was not initially in the cards. Miller's first scripts-turned-movies were the sub-par ROBOCOP sequels, which put a bad taste in his mouth from the get-go. Robert Rodriguez was persistent in that a SIN CITY film would work, and that persistence paid off. With BATMAN V SUPERMAN in the future, this will be the closest take on Miller's Dark Knight character, of which Miller had a few words to say regarding what we've seen of Batman in film so far.

Frank Miller on how Robert Rodriguez talked him into doing a Sin City film:

The irony here is that I designed Sin City so it could not be adapted to film. I wanted to show people what comics could do that movies couldnt. When Rodriguez showed up, I was so ornery. I ignored his first three phone calls. I wouldnt even meet him in my home. I met him at a Hells Kitchen bar, and he was the only one there with a cowboy hat on who was straight. He showed me some rough work hed done, and it was impressive. I thanked him and told him the answer was no. He went back to Texas. Then he said maybe we could shoot a scene just to see what it was like. Its not the sort of offer you turn down. So I went to Texas, where he had built a fully functional set, and at one point Marley Shelton looked at me with her beautiful big eyes and said, Why did my character hire somebody to kill her? Marley grasped it all and went out and gave three times the performance she had before. I walked over to Robert, kicked him in the shins and said, Im in.

Regarding the latest iterations of Batman:

When people come out with movies about characters Ive worked on, I always hate them. I have my own ideas about what the characters are like. I mean, I cant watch a Batman movie. Ive seen pieces of them, but I generally think, No, thats not him. And I walk out of the theater before its over. It includes all of them. Im not condemning what he [Nolan] does. I dont even understand it, except that he seems to think he owns the title Dark Knight. [laughs] Hes about 20 years too late for that. Its been used.

On whether or not he prefers or Batman:

The Dark Knight series is all from Batmans point of view. But if you look at Dark Knight 2, youll see a Superman whos much calmer than the one in the first Dark Knight. Batman and Superman are dead opposites. I love Superman. Do I love Batman more? Theyre not people. Theyre only lines on paper.

I love Miller's remark about the characters being only lines on a paper, but I wonder why that doesn't translate to anyone else's iteration of the character as far as film is concerned. Perhaps he feels to close to the character he created? In any event, I would like to see Frank Miller dabble in film more, as far as his writing is concerned. Here's hoping SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR is as enjoyable as the first!

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR hits theaters this Friday.

This guy sounds like a Grade A "A hole"

Plus, "The Dark Knight" goes back to the 1940's, for Pete's sake. Miller makes it sound like *HE* owns the title. What a dick!

And what do you mean "a character he created"? Frank Miller didn't create Batman.

How does someone go from Batman: Year One to All Star Batman and Robin? It's astounding, mind-boggling and actually quite sad.

It's not Miller time.

I know I shouldn't let Miller's personal beliefs have any bearing on his work, but like Orson Scott Card it's hard not to, he's a petty and xenophobic old man.

Yeah I've read his current idea about Batman. No, I am not impressed. "I am the Goddamn Batman"? Seriously?

The fact that he wrote new original material more Sin City 2 is the only thing that makes me hesitate to see it because he lost his wetting skills a very long time ago.

This guy sounds like a bitter sour-puss akin to the likes of Alan Moore. What a hypocrite. It's a shame he thinks of himself as a wannabe Hollywood director now. So much so that he made it seem like 'The Spirit' was his OWN creation instead of Eisner's. I bet the reason why he left the theater upon watching the recent Batman films was because he was too ashamed to admit that he'd never be able to live up to Nolan's adaptation of the character or his films. Fuckin' douchebag.

mentally ill for the better part of the decade making so many random claims and becoming an ignorant racist bigot. So these comments dont surprise me. He USED to be a genius. Now he's just an idiot.

"Perhaps he feels too close to the character he created?"

Umm, I always thought Bob Kane created Batman....

booo

He's starting to should like Alan Moore. Like nobody can do a character better than him. Miller and Moore are both very talented, but they are far from perfect. I think Scott Snyder is doing a great job so far on his run. And I don't think Nolan copyrighted The Dark Knight in any way, shape, or form. Didn't the public start calling it The Dark Knight trilogy? And it was Goyers idea to call part 2 TDK. As far as walking out of movies I wonder if he did the same for The Spirit or RoboCop 2? ;)

Guess now you know what it's like for people reading a lot of your comics, Frank.

" I dont even understand it, except that he seems to think he owns the title Dark Knight. [laughs] Hes about 20 years too late for that. Its been used."

WTF? First of all, when did Chris Nolan ever pretended he owned the "Dark Knight" title? He just used an often-used Batman nickname. Second of all, that nickname wasn't even invented by Frank Miller but by Bill Finger in 1940, which is 17 years before Miller was even born. Why would he have the right to use it but not Nolan?

As lauded as Year One and Dark Knight Returns might be, I have never found Frank Miller to have a very good understanding of Batman. If I had to pick a creator's era as a definitive one it would be either Denny O'Neil or Chuck Dixon

Dennis O'Neil is so underrated, or at least not celebrated enough. Miller is often credited as having invented the modern Batman, rescuing from the cheesy tv version but O'Neil is the one who put the serious back in the character and his version of the character is a lot closer to the one we know today than the version Miller created for The Dark Knight Returns.

Denny O'Neil has produced more great Batman stories than Frank, but most people are just ignorant to him.
