Hugh Jackman recommends Tom Hardy as his Wolverine replacement

09.24.2015

Hugh Jackman's time as Wolverine is coming to an end.

Having confirmed that the third solo WOLVERINE movie will be his last time donning the claws, it's bound to happen sooner rather than later that 20th Century Fox starts shopping around for the next actor who'll be tasked with keeping the beloved mutant alive for a few new movies.

I don't imagine it'll be Dougray Scott, so who could possibly take on the role?

Hugh Jackman has an idea for once, making his recommendation for who might make a good replacement once he finally decides to hang his Logan boots up.

I haven’t really given it a lot of thought. I’ve been asked that question a lot, and I’m always like, ‘I don’t wanna make it too easy on the studio to replace me,’ you know? I’ve still got one more to do. I’m sure they’re already talking about it, and there’s some actor [they’ve told] ‘shh, keep it quiet but we want you next.' He’s younger than me for sure. I think Tom Hardy would be a great Wolverine.

This doesn't mean that Hardy has any inside track on the role. But it is just an interesting thought that the guy who has embodied Wolverine for 15+ years and seven films sees Tom Hardy as one with the chops to carry the torch once it is ready to be passed.

Tom Hardy for Wolverine - yay or nay?

I would be more than happy if Hardy was next in line for Wolvie. Only problem is I don't see him wanting the role. I mean, he might be willing to do a movie or two, but Fox is going to want someone who will commit to at least 5-6 films and I just don't see Hardy having that much dedication to the character.

As for height and size, Hardy would be perfect. Bane's size did bother me a bit in TDKR but that's only cause I'm a Batman fanboy and have been so use to seeing such a large Bane in the

I don't think the average film goer is going to care/know if someone is a few inches taller than their comic book counter part. I could also see Gylenhall (spelling?) for the role if not Hardy.

Hardy would portray the standoffish and grumpiness better than Jackman. I could really careless about height, but 5,9 is better then 6,2... I mean, they made Bane a lot more physically intimidating in Batman, and I think Bale is the same height as Jackman. The only issue for the next actor is that he needs to be in it for a somewhat long contract and Fox has to be committed to portray Wolvie a lot more rageful and a real asshole.

Hugh Jackman was born in October, 1968. He's not yet even 47. If they get anybody else in their forties then they still have the same problem of an actor being too old to play the role: Wolverine is supposed to look young. Hugh Jackman was 31 in 2000 when he first appeared as Wolverine. They need to find somebody younger than that who, like Jackman, can play the role for two decades. They will either get an unknown or Zax Efron. Zac Efron will turn 28 this October and he will turn 31 in

Zac Efron will turn 28 this October and he will turn 31 in 2018 which is when they could be filming a new X-Men trilogy with the new cast from X-Men Apocalypse. If they re-introduce Wolverine and want him to look like Hugh Jackman did in the original X-Men trilogy then Zac Efron is precisely the right age. Beside, he already played a guy named Logan in The Lucky One. Plus, we all know he can do justice to the role after Neighbors which, while an overrated movie, finally put his High School Musical days behind him. And if you think being in a musical means you can't play Wolverine then consider this: [link] .

I'm not sure if you're joking or not. But I can't believe you just nominated Zac Efron for Wolverine. Dumbest casting idea I've ever heard.

Right height. Right build.

I think he's a good fit. Sure he's a couple inches taller than Wolverine is meant to be, but he is still "short" and you wont find many 5'3" actors in Hollywood with the right build, star power, and skills. I think 5'9" is a great trade off.

i'm going with Scott Caan for the next Wolverine. and the more i think about it, the more i think it can work.

I love Tom Hardy and he would kill it but I think there is a better role for him and a better choice for Wolverine. I've heard people suggest Jackie Earl Haley and he would be perfect. I don't have another candidate (though it's always interesting to imagine Bob Hoskins) in mind but someone short and gruff.

I'm just responding to what you say you've heard. Jackie Earl Haley???? Didn't he already ruin one remake featuring a guy with claws on his hand? Besides isn't he older than Jackman and the guy is super skinny? Haley might make a good Skeletor if they decide to reboot Masters of the Universe.

I would be more than fine with this. Hardy was always one of my top two choices for the role (along with Jon Bernthal aka Punisher) once Jackman stepped down. But even though I would love to see Jackman play the role for as long as he could (ie Old Man Logan), I would be very excited as a fan to see the claws passed from Jackman to Hardy.

Tom Hardy's not bad, but he seems to be suggested for just about everything.

Agree, he's a great choice. But the guy has no shortage of work available to him. And he strikes me as a guy who wants to work on different characters and stories, not continue to go back to the same character time and time again. Mad Max seems to be his only foray into the franchise world, if that takes off after Fury Road, I just can't see him wanting to get attached to another franchise - it's not like he's Jeremy Renner or something.

I doubt the Tom Hardy comment should be taken seriously

This is likely a question that he gets asked quite a lot and, like other actors, he likely gives a different answer every time.
I watched an interview with Roger Moore this morning and he was asked what question he was asked the most. \2Who is your favorite Bond villain?" "Who is your favorite Bond girl?" After a while the question loses all meaning. Roger Moore prefers to change the answers every time so that no one gets offended or the one he really hates doesn't know it is them he hates.

If you've seen Banshee then you know Antony Starr has the right ferocity to play Wolverine.

The only problem with Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine was that he was too tall. Hardy is a very talented actor but has the same issue. The next one should be shorter.

Does his height really matter that much if he nails all other aspects of the character?

Would you rather an actor who is the right size or the right personality?

Yes but considering this is the second attempt at the character it would be cool if they made him closer to the comics.

@InfamousKidd personality and size don't have to be a trade off. there's gotta be someone out there with both. hugh jackman did an amazing wolverine, but the height was the one thing that was always off. how do you succeed jackman? do what he did, plus get the height right.

@InfamousKidd

What everyone says, basically. It's the second portrayal of the character and following Jackman will be tough. It would be easier if the actor they choose look more like the comic book character than Jackman did.
