Sam Rockwell and family face some serious demons in the Poltergeist trailer

02.05.2015

poltergeist-banner

Yesterday we got a peek at some images from Gil Kenan's POLTERGEIST remake starring Sam Rockwell that delivered pretty much what you'd expect. 20th Century Fox states that Sam Raimi (who serves as producer) and director Gil Kenan are re-imagining and "contemporizing" the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is invaded by angry spirits. The bulk of remakes are generally unwanted by fans of the original so for those hoping for the best, you can get your first taste of what's to come with the trailer below.

I'm afraid to say that I'll probably fall in with the majority of folks who are underwhelmed with this trailer. Everything looks adequately shot and acted, but this preview seems to indicate that the film will copy the original beat for beat. I would have preferred that Raimi and Kenan not try to ape what Spielberg and Hooper created, but maybe it wasn't entirely their call. We'll see how the end product fares in 5 months' time.

POLTERGEIST hits theaters July 24, 2015.

I dig it. Who cares if it's a remake. At this point they are doing it for the new generation. I don't care anymore. You just have to deal with it because just when you think they can't touch a beloved franchise, they will... might as well get used to it.
This reminds me a tiny bit of Drag Me to Hell with of course Poltergeist references. Not such a bad thing.

If you love the original so much, just re-watch that but I don't think anything is wrong at this point to get an update.

You want to talk about shocking reboots/remakes, Spider-Man within a 10 year gap. That sure as hell made me feel old. That was something to complain about!

I dont understand the hate on this. I thought the original was good for its time. Sure, it could have waited to have a remake. However, most remakes are bad, and this one looks good to me. I like what I see.

useless

A typical useless remake, with a TEASER showing most of the film and Moriarty playing Tanjina... OK, the SFX look not to bad and the original was already PG-13... But most PG-13 scary films of the '80s would be rated R nowadays... Censorship is far stronger now than it was then.
Let's hope its, at least, entertaining...

Too much information in that trailer and it looks like it's full of jump scares. Like Annabelle, full of potential but the movie was ruined with too many jump scares. Looks like it's the same case with this new Poltergeist. Will give it a try but not expecting much.

Looks bad

I like Sam Rockwell, but if this has him trying to do the "You son of a bitch..." scene better than Craig T. Nelson, it will end up being more embarrassing than Zachary Quinto screaming "Khaaaaaan!. This is (much like all the others) a completely unnecessary remake. The studios need to stop doing this...I find it hard to believe there's zero original ideas for decent horror/sci-fi/fantasy films out there.

Stop these remakes or Craig T. Nelson is going to give you a spanking!

Looks OK, but I thought the remakes for Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th and Evil Dead all looked OK too. I was wrong. They have all been over stylized and lost that organic, grainy. realistic feel that made the originals classics like hearing a scary campfire story that keeps you up at night in your tent. This looks the same as those remakes, another cash grab that is all style no substance that will soon be forgotten, the only upside is Rockwell.

At least we'll get decent acting and he always choses decent movies to be in.

Despite my hatred of remakes (Stop it, for god's sake, Hollywood!), This doesn't look all that bad. Doesn't look any worse than any other ghost/possession movie as of late. Admittedly, some of those have been pretty bad, but the ones that are good don't seem a whole lot different than this one. Hell, parts of "Insidious" screamed "Poltergeist". So I'm gonna wait before I start shi**ing on this one. Let's not forget, it was produced by Raimi. My only question will be if people still would be

Only if it still felt like a blow-by-blow of Poltergeist. By giving it that name it's inviting comparisons. I mean, critics would still catch on, but audiences can be more forgiving. Sam Raimi has produced some decent movies in his time, but his name means nothing to me as far as a signifier of quality. Personally, I think it doesn't look terrible, EXCEPT that Poltergeist is such a well-known movie and the trailer told me everything I need to know that this is just a modernized version without

Less would be more

The Poltergeist is like A Christmas Story for Halloween. It's a family movie about a haunted house that plays often on television, ensuring that most of us have seen at least part of it at some point in our life. It's also a surprisingly subtle movie, that doesn't hint at being a horror movie until well into the first act. This trailer should've shown all those scenes (with modern upgrades) and then dropped the title "Poltergeist." Rockwell and DeWitt are two of the most watchable actors

Rockwell and DeWitt are two of the most watchable actors working, so if they charmed us with their family life, we might be wooed enough to check it out. Instead we get a haunted house movie that looks just as disposable as all the other haunted house movies that didn't turn out very good.

Why do trailers insist on showing the entire film? We don't need this much detail. Just give us a minute and a half of some interesting footage and some minor plot details. Other than that, movie looks like an interesting update of the classic. Kind of just retreads the same material, but I guess it's nice to have an update for a new generation we know wouldn't go back and revisit the original.

Does it look good?

Yes. But so does the original and this looks just like the original. IMO, if you're going to do a remake you do something different. You take the basic premise and do everything different (i.e. Robocop or Ocean's 11). Anything else just isn't interesting. Why not just watch the original? The problem with a movie like Poltergeist is that, 1. the premise is too simple to do anything too different. And, 2. it's a damn perfect movie in it's original form. So yeah, I won't be bothering with this.

Exactly. You've said exactly what's on my head behind the seething rage. I'm really trying to be levelheaded when it comes to this. It's hard. I never understood why some people get so overly angry with remakes. I always found those people to be a bit ridiculous. I still don't understand it, and I'm one of those people now, because for some reason every time I watch this trailer it makes me angrier and angrier.

There's nothing wrong with PG-13 horror, and Poltergeist has always been a PG-13 franchise. In fact, I think it was one of the movies that prompted the PG-13 rating to be created (along with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom). But I agree that so far, this film doesn't seem to be doing anything new or original, aside from making it present day. The original has aged very well, and this looks unnecessary. I'm keeping my expectations low. That said, if it gets good reviews, I'll probably

There's no need.

This is the movie I'm gonna say this for. There have been plenty that I've stuck by. Remakes, reboots alike. I'm pretty damn lenient when it comes to movies. This one just gets under my skin. Not in a good way. Fast edits, loud noises, scare chords, modern day horror PG13 horror movie marketing. Its not for me. And shouldn't be for anyone when there is a better version. Yes. I said it without seeing this movie. There is something magical about the original. Something iconic about the

First off, it's not Evil Dead. Its about PG scares, not buckets of blood. I don't get that complaint.

But, the original have a very charismatic case from the kids on up and this remake fails at that.

It looks like it is following the beats of the original and revving up the effects. Hmmmm. It looks like disposable fun. Not hating, but not excited.

For every step horror takes forward as a genre, they take 2 steps back with another shitty [link] etc. Even the best remakes can't compare to the source material, so why not work on encouraging fresh new original films instead of bleeding already established concepts dry?

Mixed feelings. I know they approached this seriously which makes me optimistic. But the loud jump scares and flashy type horror flicks lately have all been disappointing. Plus that clip of Sam Rockwell saying "we just want our daughter back" was some pretty horrendous acting. I'll check it out but my expectations aren't sky high.

How do you replace Zelda Rubinstein with Jared Harris?!!?

Why would you get a man who couldn't out act a piece of cardboard to fill the shoes of Zelda Rubinstein??? Horrible casting right there.

The kids also seem really annoying already.

The effects are already shitty looking compared to the original. The story is so cut and paste there is no point for this remake.

I love Sam Rockwell and will watch this on Netflix because I will see anything he is in, but this just looks like a shitty cut and paste horror job.

They're remaking Poltergeist, not 2001. Everybody relax a little bit. It's Sam Rockwell, whom I would pay $10 to watch do anything, and it's spooky. What else do you want? Go watch the original. You're being more nostalgic than anything. It's certainly entertaining, as I'm sure this version will be, but it is not the pinnacle of filmmaking people are remembering it as.

Yup looks like a uneceptional retread of a classic. If that one scene was thier attempt at recreating the clown scene (the originals scariest moment) they utterly failed. Also were they delibritley trying to piss me off, nothing like spoiling what's supposed to be the finnial twist in the Trailer!

What was bad about it?

Don't forget that the original movie was also rated PG. So what if there is no dismemberment, does that mean its not worth seeing? I do not get the argument that all horror has to be rated R or 18A, if you do it right you can still make a very scary movie without sawing people in half... I actually think it looks decent, I'll give it a chance.

Actually Mr. Kurtz, the original rating was "R" and the only reason it was changed to PG was because Spielberg demanded it. It's a well documented fact. Even the people that saw the movie at the time considered it an "R" movie. I do agree though, not all horror need to be R for effect. For gore though, yes.

To Movie Lover- That was the UK rating, not the U.S. It was given a PG after Spielberg scoffed at the R-rating.

I think you can have a scary movie that's PG-13, horror doesn't need graphic violence. But I think the problem is that we've seen the rating turn the scary movie genre into a very bland, broad category that's mostly about quick cuts and loud noises to startle your senses and call it "scary". To me this looks like a retread of everything we've become accustomed to already.

You may be right about Spielberg fighting against an R rating, but it was actually Spielberg who helped in the creation of PG-13. Therefore, while the original would have received an R then, because there was no PG-13 rating, it likely would have gotten a PG-13 today. If it didn't, Spielberg would have tried to get the rating changed. Still, how does Spielberg avoiding an R rating have anything to do with this film? People seem to forget that the envelop is continually being pushed in the

Utterly disgusted.

Ive never been angry about a reboot/remake before. But for some reason this one gets to me. It looks like shit. The original still holds up as a wonderful haunted house movie. This looks like generic P13 Ghosthouse trash. So help me god if some POS Hollywood studio remakes Back to the Future. So. Help. Me. GOD.

Considering we've been saturated with PG-13 haunted house/possession movies for what seems like the last decade, this doesn't seem to offer anything new. If by contemporizing simply means turning the original TV into an HDTV, well, mission accomplished... I guess.

But, the original was rated PG. I understand if they are remaking a hard R rated horror into a PG-13, but this rating is acceptable for Poltergeist.
