The new Dark Knight Rises trailer has arrived!

May. 1, 2012by: Alex Maidy

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES viral site has barely been up for 24 hours and the new trailer has already been revealed in its entirety.

Almost entirely composed of new footage, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES now has some items we can confirm:

Bane (Tom Hardy) will be intelligible after all.

Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) is working for/with Bane and switches sides at some point.

Marion Cotillard is Bruce Wayne's love interest.

John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) does play a significant role in the plot.

With all of that being said, I still feel somewhat let down by this and the previous trailer. For some reason, this just does not feel like a Batman movie to me. Sure, it looks pretty damn good, but it just feels more like a Bane movie. And the Catwoman costume just feels like it does not fit with the rest of the realistic world Christopher Nolan was going for.

Even so, I will be in the front of the line to see this one. The scale of the movie looks amazing.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES on July 20th.

Extra Tidbit: Joseph Gordon-Levitt is totally Robin.

I hate these people...

Look just because the movie is realistic that doesn't mean its not Batman. I love batman and hence i love the nolan's version. Can anyone honestly think of a superhero who can live in a realistic world other than batman? So just stop saying "too realistic so batman fans hate this". Batman fans love this son. They really do.

Batman fans love this cause the movies are good and its the best batman films to date but theres no denyng Nolan has taken away alot from thecharacter as much as stayed true to the character in the comics. This is Nolans interpretation of Batman, not the comic adaptation.

While having Bruce sacrifice himself and die with Bane to save Gotham while the spirit of Batman lives on wouldn't be the worst ending to the series, I have the feeling that Nolan only wants us to believe that Bruce may die in order to raise the stakes and ramp up the tension in the film. Otherwise, everyone knows this is part 3, the last film, and there's no way the hero can die, but Nolan has everyone thinking its a real possibility which will only make the movie more engaging and real.

The people who love this, Must not be Batman Fans!!!

This trailer may be good, but it's not an awesome BATMAN trailer, Batman is a dark hero who preys on his victims in the NIGHT of gothic Gotham City, this city doesn't look like Gotham, and since when is Batman an international spy story during the daytime, this isn't the Bourne series, honestly without a man in a batsuit and catsuit, what makes this seem like a Batman movie?

Well, let's see: Bane, Gotham City, Commissioner Gordon, the Batmobile, the Batwing, Bruce Wayne, Alfred, and many more things makes this a Batman movie.

I'm a massive Batman fan and thought this trailer was incredible. Quite a rash and douchey generalization to make there, if you ask me.

Really? Let me look around my place here for a second. Hmmmmm, Over 100 Batman graphic novels & TPB's, check. Every single DVD of the DCAU concerning Batman, check. Action figures and Batmobiles from every era, check. Batman symbol tattoo on my arm, check. 5 posters from different films on my walls. Check. I would say I am a Batman fan and guess what? I freaking LOVE THIS!! So I would say that you sir are speaking out of your ass with that comment. Thank you.

Well you'll have to excuse the countless non-Batman fans out there. We don't know any better.... I'm sorry man but you're an idiot. I'm a HUGE Batman fan and I love all of the Nolan Bat movies... I think there's probably a few Batman fans out there that agree with me.

I'm Gotham's Reckoning

I felt emotional in this trailer alone. Excitement. Melancholy. Fear. I can't imagine how I would feel after watching the whole film. This is the legend ending tale we don't need, but the one we deserve.

I had no problem hearing what Bane was saying in the trailer. It was only a few words but I don't see why people are complaining. Nolan can do no wrong.

I'm having trouble getting excited for this.

Mini Bane is still very hard to understand, and the whole occupy thing has me worried. Jeff Goldblum asked "Is there any Batmen in your Batman trailer?"

I have always thought of the Nolan Batman movies as the story of Gotham City. As Harvey said in TDK, "The night is darkest just before the dawn," TDKR looks to be Gothams darkest hour just before the dawn.

This movie has everything that I could ever want. Sexy catwoman, badass non-retarded Bane, Christian Bale, utter epicness, class warfare, an attack on the stock exchange, an attack on a football game, bridges blowing up, upheaval of the massesJGL doing who knows what, Gary Oldman with his sweet ass mustache, an unraveling of society, numerous tumblers and the bat jet/plane....all it's missing are tits, but that's what the internet is for. It's like Nolan extracted this from my dreams.

It baffles me that people still post on here that "This doesn't look that good" or "This isn't doing it for me." Go find a movie that does. In the meantime, I see over a hundred other people on here who would be more than happy to go to TDKR in your place. Your loss.

Dude, come on. Everyone is allowed to write what they think of whatever the article is about. They shouldn't be 'not allowed' to post just because they don't like what's being shown. That doesn't make sense a 'like it or don't talk' mentality? Aside from that though I mean just to clarify I never said it's gonna suck nor am I bashing the movie (though I guess me not being excited for it could be offensive to some hardcore bat-fans) so if my comment or others similar are what you're

Meh.

I'm sure the movie will be amazing, cuz pretty much everything Nolan does is. But this trailer feels just kind of middle of the road for me. Nothing bad, but nothing amazing.

But knowing Nolan, he's saving the best stuff for theaters. Think of all the iconic Joker moments in TDK that he could've thrown in the trailer, but didn't.

I will say this though. I'll be really disappointed if Bane doesn't end up being inhumanely ginormous by the end of the film. I get that these movies are

But come on. The only way to beat Batman is to be inhumanly strong. And what a great opportunity for some quality digital doubles/forced perspective effects. Crossing my fingers.

Bane's Voice

I'm aware that my dissenting opinion isn't shared by most, but I'm a little bit let down that Nolan succumbed to fan/studio pressure to alter Bane's voice. I understand why it was done, but it feels like it went too far the other way as if it's over processed. I thought that it added to his mystique and now (especially in the 2nd clip when he is directly over Bruce Wayne) it borders cartoonish.

Epicness

I don't get why everyone's saying this is a Bane-not-Batman story -- it's both. Why can't it be both?! The new trailer is the best yet, leaves me wanting way, way more. July 20 cannot arrive soon enough, as far as I'm concerned. Nolan's trailers are always great (to me) and this is no exception. Has anyone else seen all of the Dark Knight Rises trailer parodies that are popping up? Some are lame, but some are hysterically funny:

I totally don't get it

all the 'I'm crying' and 'best trailer ever' and 'most complex trailer of the year'

seriously? I realize I'll get labelled a troll and get a thousand thumbs down because I'm not a Nolan fanboy/on the bandwagon but I really do WANT to be excited for this movie. I thought Begins was solid and really enjoyed TDK -- but nothing I've seen from TDKR has gotten me excited, heck I don't even know if I'll see it in the theatre. I'll see it one way or another for sure, as I'm interested in seeing how they wrap up the whole trilogy story-arc but other than that, I just don't see what's causing the crazy reactions to this. There's certainly potential and I hope the movie surprises me when I actually see it (going in with lower expectations it could do that) but dammit there just isn't much here to make me excited, some cool shots/ideas but most of it just looks 'meh, alright' to me, and half the trailer being so dark and murky didn't help (nothing wrong with dark scenes, but I hope it's easier to make out when we actually see the thing)... I'd say at the most I'm just 'interested' but hey, to each their own!

Class warfare in Gotham. Bane turning Gotham into No Man's Land. Football fields and bridges being detonated. Bane and Batman throwing it down. The Bat Plane. Bane capturing and breaking Bruce. Catwoman. Climactic battle between cops and criminals on the steps of City Hall. Joseph Gordon-Levitt fighting to save Gotham. Yeah... Nothing to get excited about.

I dont know what people are talking about TDKR's first trailer is the only trailer other than the hobbit that I watched over 10 times easy. This is another great trailer. I dont understand where you get the This is a bane story not batman. The trailer basically lets you know this is all about batman trying to come back then he does and he gets broken and he has to overcome serious obstacles to give the people what they deserve. This is a very batman story!

Eh....it's OK

First of all, I am very excited about The Dark Knight Rises, but the trailers haven't really been blowing me away. The Avengers trailers were so epic that they gave me goosebumps watching them. TDKR trailers have just been mediocre. The Catwoman stuff was the only thing in the trailer that excited me.

Perhaps Nolan will have Batman officially retire at the end of this movie and then years from now he will adapt Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.

After cleaning up my screen, I have to say that I dig, dig, dig these trailers. They show you just enough to wet your whistle, but they certainly don't spoon feed you the entire plot. We can kind of assume when certain scenes occur, but, to me, there's nothing that says, "Oh, there's the last scene and this is what will happen." This'll be a monster of a movie. If, of course, Nolan doesn't fumble it.

I'm very proud of how far Batman has come in cinema. There was never a bat-film that I've never liked. Nothing disappointed me because I grew up with him. Each film evolved just as I and millions of other kids had. Beginning with Batman (89) to Batman Returns, I was introduced with the Burton age. Batman Forever and Batman & Robin were great adventure films for an 8 year old! As a teen I fell in love with Nolan's films and now (22 years old) I'm happy to know this film is becoming something

As a teen I fell in love with Nolan's films and now (22 years old) I'm happy to know this film is becoming something different than it's predecessors. It's a lot more mature than Begins was but then again Begins was more sophisticated than B&R. I'm just excited to see another installment from Nolan and Co. Great story, moving music, it's exciting! Whenever another batman film comes out I'm sure that would be just as awesome. My only complaint would have to be Bane's voice. Yeah, I can tell Nolan tried to appease the masses by CLARIFYING it but I really liked the original voice. I understood it and loved the garble and animalistic vibe Bane gave off. That's just me but as long as 99% of movie watchers can enjoy the film then it's fine by me. I don't want to ruin anyone's experience just because I prefer it someway. July can't get here fast enough!

Meh

Looks like more of the same, and that's not a bad thing really. I just hope ppl don't ruin it for themselves through the hype like i did for Spider Man 3, man that movie was disappointing. I'm kind of bumbed that they seem to be going with the standard "Catwoman falls for Bats" tie in, i was hoping Catwoman would stay a baddie through out. I am interested in getting Bane's whole story what with that airplane scene. What is it that this guy can do that they would have to do something like that?

He's right, Not a Batman Movie!!

I have to agree. This doesn't seem like a Batman movie. And no, making the statement that the last film was then a Joker movie, doesn't hold weight, because the Joker is much more integral part of the Batman mythology than Bane, Joker has been with the series 50 years longer than Bane. Also, is Batman a night time superhero, isn't Gotham mainly depicted at night?

The general public isn't terribly familiar with Bane, so it makes sense that the trailers would focus on him to make people aware. But saying it's not a Batman film based on two and a half minutes of footage seems silly, eh?

Think of the daytime stuff like this...would 9/11 been scarier during the daytime or nighttime...I say daytime. What Bane is doing, I believe, is trying to get Batman out of his comfort zone. That's what I think

Bane is still a pretty big part of the Batman mythology. He was the guy who broke Batman's back and put him out of commission for a long time. That's a pretty big part of his story.

"...this just does not feel like a Batman movie to me"

To be fair, Nolans films were never strictly speaking Batman films, theyre crime dramas which just happened to have a man in a batsuit. And this feels too much like a Bane movie? Then TDK was Joker movie through and through. Alex you shouldve complained about this tone even before TDK, now its a little too late, dont you think? :P

Atleast for me, I got addicted to Nolans Bat-verse BECAUSE he cut down the gloss and glammer of it, and made raw realistic gritty THRILLER movies about Batman. Yes, maybe his vision & this trilogy is not the ULTIMATE Batman films, I dont think this was his intention either, But what he made was GREAT films about crime, retribution and its consequences, and in the end, all I want is if a movie is itself good or bad, regardless of sacrificing of the mystical and comicbookish angles of the source meterial. To that end, this is the best Batman trilogy that I can ever hoped for.

As Guy before me so perfectly pointed out, inspite of the quality, there are key elements indeed missing here, but isnt this why reboots are for? Maybe someday another great director can rebuild a world of Batman with its immortality of Ras and the mysticism of Gotham properly intact. We can hope those will be just as great but equally different from Nolan, as Nolans were from Schumacher or Burtons.

For the trailer, I can safely say this is the BEST damn trailer Ive seen all year. Contrasting The Avengers (my previous favorite till now) which was bright, colorful, humorous and filled with rousing actions, here the muted starting of the trailer really reflects the dispairity and hopelessness of Gotham, and as we know the happenings of earlier, we actually feel that dispair too. Building up to an exhilarating finishing with Batman returning at last, drove home one point it sat out to do: this is The Perfect Grand Finale were all expecting since the ending of TDK. Oh, another thing, this film has a man in a frigging Bat costume with ears and eveything, I dont think a Cat costume without ears is much of a strech. I love Hathaway, so this too is a plus for me.

P.S. Marion is totally Talia Al Ghul who before the 3rd act will be reveiled to be the secret baddie, as Catwoman switches to good from bad.

Both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight felt like Batman movies to me. This one just doesn't have the same feeling. I have no problem with the tone or the style. I love both of the first two films and I am sure I will love this one. But, the trailer just doesn't amp me up.

To each his own I guess. But to me, BB & TDK had a bigger difference in style and structure. BB actually had some elements of traditional Bat-verse, like Arkham, Wayne Tower, Batcave, secret entry to that cave, League of Shadows etc...but TDK had none of it, and for that reason it was much more like a straightforward crime thriller with a terrorist on the loose than anything else. If anyone doesn't have a problem leaping from BB to TDK, then I don't get how TDK & TDKR can have a bigger

My guess: Bane breaks Batman's back to the disapproval of Catwoman, JGL steps in as a Nightwing/Robin-esque figure only to get killed by Bane, which then leads to Batman coming back with Catwoman as a partner. I don't think Nolan's ego is big enough to kill off Batman.

"I won't bury you. I've already buried to many members of the Wayne family."

Love this line. Somehow Alfred seems to have the best lines in each Batman film.

The trailer is great. Beautiful and just as great as the Prometheus(sp?) trailer. I'm more excited for The Avengers, but this movie is right behind it by INCHES.

AMAZING. I was a little skeptical after seeing the first trailer but this one has confirmed this movie will be epic. Got chills while watching it. And I'm loving that Gordon-Levitt is playing such a crucial role. Not to mention it looks like Hathaway is killing it in this role. July 20th where are you?!

Am I the only one...

who would be really disappointed if Joseph Gordon-Levitt really ended up becoming Robin? It totally goes against Nolan's disdain of the character. I'd much rather have the film close with Batman's hanging up the cape and cowl, and have Levitt take up his place and be his protege, leading to a Batman Beyond like series.

Well the series is ending so I think it would make sense if this film ended with Batman dying and Joseph Gordon-Levitt taking over for him as a Robin-like character.

True... But I think Robin is only effective as a sidekick... It wasn't until years later that Dick Grayson became the hero... And I do know Nolan does tend to bend the story to make for an effective story, but I don't think he'd take so many liberties with Robins character by changing it completely, just to close out the series.

It looks great, but...

I think the trailers are lacking. I feel like they're lacking the epic feel that we got from The Dark Knight's international trailer... But I have no doubt in my mind that this will be an epic film. As a matter of fact, I hope that this time, the Academy will finally give Nolan's Batman series its due.

Looks fantastic. Notice that Nolan doesn't use the digital intermediate method. Thats why his movies look beautifully epic and old school. They don't make em like this any more. I'm not entirely sold on Anne as Catwoman. Great actress but does anyone believe that she has the capability of beating up a room full of men?

I personally don't hear a big difference... Maybe I'm one of the few that could understand him before, but I'm still hearing people say they couldn't make it out. Either way, I think people are making too big a deal of it, like they did with Batman's growl.

I cannot warm-up to that Catwoman costume. I really tried but this is the first time we've seen a significant amount of footage of it and it still looks like it doesn't fit the world.

Also, I agree that it looks like a good film but not necessarily a Batman film. Hopefully, I'm worrying for nothing.

A lot of the time you watch the trailer and you basically know what you're getting, but thankfully this leaves us enough in the dark. Looks like Bane will be an impressive character - not seen enough of Catwoman yet to call it really.
I'm probably more psyched for Prometheus, but still - can't wait to see this.

Best trailer so far. It shows off the scope and scale of the "epic conclusion" better than the previous ones did. Also, great to see more of the Bat in action - it's like a cross between a lobster and the flying Batmobile from Batman Beyond. Bane's voice does sound a lot better, but I still think he sounds like Sean Connery.

When oh when will people get that this is not a Batman movie?

To explain, these movies are now bigger than Batman. This is Nolan more than Bob Kane. It's Bale more than Keaton, West.
It's film more than comic, and cartoon.

This shouldn't have to live up to Batman of the past, because it's bringing Batman to the future.

Well I know it's a dangerous thing to speaks one's mind on Joblo when you "don't agree with the majority" but what the hell, haha. After seeing this latest trailer I'm still not feeling this movie.
Trying to make this Bat-universe feel "real" turns me off (and no, I wasn't a fan of the Schumacher movies but I thought the Burton ones were pretty spot on!).
And it all looks too melodramatic.
I hated Begins with a passion. Liked TDK. But don't think I'll be spending money on this one.
Bring on

The overblown Nolan love of the last 5 years is insanely obnoxious. He's got a decent eye and some good ideas, but he's quite a clunky storyteller and his ambition far outweighs his ability. It's disappointing how undiscerning otherwise good critics become when Nolan is involved.

I do disagree though - I thought Batman Begins was vastly superior to Dark Knight.

I feel like Nolan's Bat-movies just won't stand the test of time. People like them today. There is somewhat of a weird "Nolan love fest" thing these days (well, these years). But I think with time, the way people view his Batman movies will change.

And what's the deal with having the whole "real world" feel/vibe and practical "batmobile" and "batwing" and tactical Bat-armor if your main dude's running around with a cape!! What's practical about that?? lol

That's a big part of the problem with these films, Dark Knight in particular. The faux-realism clashes horribly with the comic book logic Nolan employs when he runs into plot-walls.

If he wants to remake Heat with Batman as the lead, that's fine. But don't revert to fantasy when convenient - it just looks like a gaping plot hole.

You don't think Nolan's will stand the test of time??? Burton's ARE DATED. Dude Batman Returns fucking sucks, it's a Burton movie on crack, that doesn't feel like a Batman movie.

Go watch Cabin in the Woods.

Good trailer, but Hathaway's Catwoman seems very bland. Not just looks but the acting seems very "meh".

Other than that, this looks like a damn fine movie. Though I'm curious if it is going to be as good as The Avengers(which is currently stands as my favorite comic book movie).

Eh..

I love Batman.
I loved Batman Begins. I loved the Dark Knight. I will probably love this movie...

But I cannot wait to have my comic book version of Batman back. One with that gritty tone and mood of the character, but isn't afraid to have a Joker who actually has a white face, a Batsuit that isn't militaristic, a Batman that doesn't garble his words, a Ra's Al Ghul that IS actually immortal instead of just someone built on lies and word of mouth. The Nolan movies are technical marvel's, and great stories, but at times they feel like they're ashamed to be associated with comic books.

The Avengers has not only been amazing this year, but it wasn't afraid to take a character from a "real world" setting (Tony Stark).....a pair him up with a god to fight aliens. It wasn't afraid to wear it's comic book fantasy proudly and still be AMAZING. Batman in Nolan's universe has tried so hard to suck the fantastical elements out of itself that sometimes I miss the elements of the character and his world that are present in the comics and animated series.

A fair point, but isn't the Batman world a little less fantastical than the one in The Avengers anyway? There are no Gods and aliens in Gotham, I'm pretty sure Ra's is as crazy as the Batman Universe gets and they seem to have stuck with that as Ra's is apparently returning this year. I think one of the things I love about the Nolan-Batman films is that they have that sense they are ashamed to be comic-booky. Heck, the other 50 superhero films released over the last 12 years certainly

I do see what you mean though, its likely the next incarnation of Batman on the big screen will be a kind of mid-way point between the Schumacher films and the Nolan ones, can't see any topping the latter though.

In Nolan I Trust....BUT!!

Fuck..this trailer I loved and hated at the same time. Made me question the tone of the movie and more of what it is about. At the same time I cannot sleep because it was that good.

SPOILERS (possibly)

judging by that trailer I do believe Batman does get his back broken in the first 20 of the film and then it goes from there. JGL and Hathaway made it seem like it will happen.

I really don't know what to say but I'm pissed...only because I want to see the movie now.

Great Trailer

What do people want from this series. We already know it's a more "serious" tone, so why expect some stupid marvel type trailer. This trailer was meant to do one thing, and that is set a tone, make you feel like all hope is lost. And it succeeded great at doing it.

You want cheesy popcorn bullshit trailers, go watch GI Joe, or Battleship.

Meh

Looks great. HOWEVER, I think this will be the third best of the summer. Prometheus just looks like it has a much more richer story that is deep and dark, The Avengers is doing something that has never been done before and word of mouth is fantastic for it.

That being said, it's not like it won't be great. There are three movies, this will probably be the 2nd best of the three. I'm really intrigued to see what Gordon-Levitt's role is and WHO IS THE PERSON UP ABOVE WATCHING BANE AND BATMAN

And what is Avengers doing? Putting together a bunch of heros in one movie?? That's nothing new buddy. I will agree about Prometheus, but that is potentially going to be PG-13, so I will keep hope alive.

You have Die Hard 4 as your avatar, you've lost all credibility.

Halflife, you're a fucking idiot. I have John McLane as my avatar. When they have one where he is in an airduct holding a lighter I'll change it. Of course I haven't looked in a while so who knows. And yes, they have combined five years of individual movies and built up to this which has never been done. Go jerk off to Nolan's picture you stupid fuck. I said it still looks great.

And he's back in the game!

I have to say that after being blown away by the Avengers, I lost some of the excitement that I originally had for TDKR, but now, it is almost completely restored. This looks just as awesome and exciting as The Avengers! This could turn out to be the best "superhero summer" ever, folks!

It doesnt come off as just a superhero movie which i totally dig. The Avengers just comes off as a superhero entertain the crap out of you movie which i wont complain about at all, but the Batman movies have always been more than just a superhero movie. hope it gets a nomination for best picture if it doesn't, hell it better be Prometheus

Favorite trailer to date

That fuckin' ruled.

The more I see of this flick, the more it just oooooozes the feel of Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns. By which I mean the third act of the book (spoiler alert) when all chaotic hell has broken loose in Gotham, until Batman is riding a horse, leading the 'Sons of Batman' army to the center of town. A general, retaking the city.

If 'Begins' was Nolan's tribute to Ridley Scott, and 'Dark Knight' his tribute to Michael Mann...I am getting a very strong James Cameron

If this seems like a Bane movie, then TDK was a Joker' movie

I was also let down by the trailer, but to say this doesn't feel like a Batman movie is an overstatement. True it feels and looks completely different, but this is definitely going to be the most Bruce Wayne driven out of all the previous entries.

It's trying to set a tone...it's not going for some bullshit show action set piece after action set piece like Avengers....This is a different movie. It's more serious.

How can you be disappointed? This trailer was phenomenal. It sent a chill down my spine. I like the new direction this has taken, with such a hopeless situation. I love the dark tone of this and the hopelessness. It also seems to have the best action of the three. I don't even know if it's possible for this to be better than TDK, but I want it to be.

I do not like what they've done with Bane's voice. In the prologue it was much more uneven, strained and menacing. Now it's too clear and too loud. I'm not going to let something so minor ruin my enjoyment of the movie but it was much better before. Some minor cleaning up would have been fine but this is a whole new voice.

Let's wait until we see the film and his voice in context. A lot of the dialogue in this trailer (especially early on) seems to be used without the ambience and sounds of the scene, which hopefully makes it sound more realistic. We'll see. Still extremely excited!
