A Resident Evil TV series is in development at Netflix

After RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER brought the long-running film franchise based upon Capcom video-game series to an end in 2016, audiences had to know that it was only a matter of time before RESIDENT EVIL was brought back from the dead. It didn't take long before it was announced that a reboot with an all-new cast was in development which will be directed by Johannes Roberts, director and co-writer of the surprisingly successful survival thriller 47 METERS DOWN, and it seems that the franchise will also be heading to television.

Deadline has reported that Netflix is developing a scripted series based on RESIDENT EVIL, and although the project is in the very early stages, Deadline has heard that while it will keep the basic premise of the franchise, it will also expand the universe and deepen the existing mythology. It's expected that the Resident Evil series will "explore the dark inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the new world order caused by the outbreak of the T-virus." Constantin Film, the studio behind the RESIDENT EVIL movies, is also involved in this potential series and the search is currently underway for a show-runner.

The six films in the RESIDENT EVIL film franchise followed Alice (Milla Jovovich) as she battled against the nefarious Umbrella Corporation who had triggered a world-wide zombie apocalypse. It didn't take long before the film franchise embraced the over-the-top action at the expense of the survival horror aspects, and although I doubt that the new big-screen reboot will change that, perhaps the TV series is our best bet at making Resident Evil scary once again.
