Alien: Covenant will be a "beautiful meeting" of both Alien and Prometheus

Michael Fassbender Alien: Covent Noomi Rapace

Although PROMETHEUS didn't quite live up to my expectations, I was able to find more than enough to like to keep my spirits high for Ridley Scott's upcoming sequel. Production on ALIEN: COVENANT wrapped up last month and with a little under a year to go until it arrives in theaters, there's still plenty of time for me to let the hype in my head reach unattainable levels. Have I learned nothing? Michael Fassbender will be returning as David, the synthetic who is discovered by the crew of the Covenant on a "dark and dangerous" new world, and the actor spoke with Collider recently to express his excitement for the new film.

I have to say, this Alien is going to be – I’m really excited to see it and everybody in the film was saying that there’s a film that we all wanna see. It’s much scarier than Prometheus, but it’s got that sort of same scope as Prometheus, that imminent sort of disaster feel, that Alien had. So it’s kind of a beautiful meeting of both of those films. I’m really excited to see it, I think it’s gonna be super scary, number one. And again, with the massive scope of Prometheus.

It all sounds good to me, but I suppose we'll have to wait and see if Ridley Scott can actually pull this off and get those people who felt burned by PROMETHEUS back on-board his grand multi-film vision for the ALIEN franchise. ALIEN: COVENANT also stars Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, Billy Crudup, Noomi Rapace and will hit theaters on August 4, 2017.

I have to do my best not to get overly excited about this one because of how Prometheus turned out. Scott had the look down, but he really flaked out when it came to choosing how the story should have been executed. As soon as he brought Lindelof, (master of asking questions without providing any answers) aboard to rewrite the script and distance it from Alien while still teasing the promise of something like it, I knew something was wrong. It would have been one thing to set the film in the same universe as Alien and then do something with the story that had nothing to do with it at all, but they lured Alien fans in like myself and then inadvertently ripped the rug out from under us when they presented their final product: a film that wanted to examine the dangers and consequences of space exploration and the ongoing debate of faith versus science, but was hampered by a loose connection to Alien that wound up making certain scenes feel obligatory and weakened simply because they were scrambling to pay homage to it while pushing their own story forward. I've come to realize that if they simply just chose one route or another, like making a completely original story or making another Alien film, that they would have been better off. It was the blending of the two that made this project overly ambitious and impossible to deliver on. The fact that this new one seems to be more of an Alien film seems like a step in the right direction because they're committing to one idea, yet I'm still not going to allow myself to get too hyped up over this...unless those damn trailers get to me...Ughh, I'm going to feel really stupid if I get reeled in again and then let down.

Be careful Daniel-Son. Just keep reminding yourself of how good the first Prometheus trailer was compared to the final product. Don't be fooled again.

2017. Let's Pause for a Moment to Realize

That we are getting Alien, Blade Runner, and Star Wars films all in the same year?? It really is such a glorious, wonderful time to be alive. What else is coming out? Well: Wonder Woman, Justice League, John Wick 2, Kong, Wolverine 3, King Arthur (I'm down for it, loved the trailer), The Mummy (with Tom Cruise!), The Dark Tower, Ghost in the Shell, Thor, Spiderman, A Batman Lego movie, Guardians 2, Kingsmen 2, that Valerian flick (glad to see Clive Owen in a big budget film again), Dunkirk....

I'll be broke by the end of 2017, but who cares; it's worth it. Great time for all of us schmoes. Rejoice!

As for Alien: Covenant, I really enjoyed Prometheus (for some reason, saw it three times in 3D in theaters, and I normally hate 3D) -- although I haven't seen it since it first came out on video. Looking forward to A:C quite a bit, especially with that cast and Scott hopefully still tapping into the energy that gave us The Martian.

what's crazy is how many of those movies were considered "never going to happen" a few years ago (Dark Tower, Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner sequel). then all of sudden, they were like, fuck it. let's do them all.

Spot on!

I only clicked on this article to see if the Joblo writer gave Prometheus a back handed compliment to start the article. Awesome, never fails. 10/10 they always say something stupid and predictable about how much ''it wasn't their cup of tea'' or ''it didn't personally live up to my expectations''.

Funny... I only clicked on this article to scroll down the comment section and see how many fanboys would be there defending this shitty film. Never fails either, 10/10 there's always at least one.

Dude, what do you want? They said they found enough to like to want another. That isn't high praise, but certainly no insult, either. Did you expect unadulterated praise? JoBlo has never been about just reporting the facts, ever. If you don't like that, go somewhere else.

I really enjoyed Prometheus despite a couple of issues. I guess Covenant will let us know if this new element to the franchise has any legs. Honestly it's only Alien: Resurrection and AvP: Requiem that have significantly disappointed me, so I'm generally happy to see more Alien films, and like the feel of Scott's new films.

Can't believe this is basically still a year away from release.

Don't trust the Fass

I adore Fassbender, but I remember him saying that the Prometheus script was the best thing he ever read (or something along those lines), and we saw how that film turned up. I'm still looking forward to this film, but I'm going to keep my expectations in check.

Noomi is in it now?

I thought you previously reported that she wasn't going to be in it? Did I miss something?

She was spotted on set. I think it was supposed to be a secret.

It was reported belatedly that she'd joined the cast - nobody knows to what extent, could just be a flashback sequence explaining what David's been up to.

Prometheus sure did look pretty. But my god some of the characters were so wooden and dumb within the muddled plot. Hopefully he can rectify it.
