Exclusive: Check out this awesome teaser footage for WWII epic The Mighty Eighth!

Nov. 11, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Just in time for Veteran's Day, we have a really cool exclusive for you, which comes in the form of a sneak peek at teaser footage/concept trailer for THE MIGHTY EIGHTH, a WWII epic that focuses on the B17 air crews piloting through the onslaught of the Luftwaffe. The footage was put together by Hydraulx, the special effects company formed by Greg & Colin Strause (SKYLINE, TAKE SHELTER). The film has yet to be shot with the script out to cast and making its debut at AFM, so this is a unique peek at not only the proposed film, but how it's being sold in the early stages. It's a very cool teaser, regardless, and one that shows a mountain of potential for the project.

Take a look:

Here's the synopsis:

Five miles above the earth and deep behind enemy lines, eleven men inside a bomber known as the “Flying Fortress” fight for their lives against swarms of enemy German fighters. As American bombers are picked off one by one, their mission becomes very clear: survive.

THE MIGHTY EIGHTH was written by Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE, ACT OF VALOR) and is produced by David Hoberman (THE FIGHTER, THE PROPOSAL), Todd Lieberman (THE FIGHTER, THE PROPOSAL) and Greg & Colin Strause, with director Rick Jacobson (BITCH SLAP, Starz Spartacus: War of the Damned) taking the helm.

“My goal with THE MIGHTY EIGHTH is to create a film that not only thrills and entertains the masses, but opens eyes and honors an important part of World War II that has never been portrayed the way it actually was. Terrifying, intense, bloody, brutal, emotional, heroic, spectacular... all anchored around the special, emotional bond between eleven Americans boys, far from home, bound together by the darkest of days,” said Jacobson.

Very cool stuff. As a veteran, I'm honored to be able to share this, especially today, and more than that, am thankful that folks are still trying to make films that show the good, bad, and the ugly of war through the men and women who fight in them. Like the upcoming LONE SURVIVOR, it's great to see these stories still being told.

THE MIGHTY EIGHTH is currently in development.

Extra Tidbit: The obvious comparison to this is 1990's Memphis Belle, which is one of my favorite (and highly underrated) war films of all time. Great cast (Eric Stoltz, Matthew Modine, Tate Donovan, D.B Sweeney, Billy Zane, Sean Astin, Harry Connick Jr., John Lithgow, and David Strathairn). I highly recommend checking it out if you've never seen it.

Man, this looks intense. But aside from that, thank you for your service Paul! The freedoms we take for granted wouldn't be possible without the men and women that we're honoring today. Happy Veteran's Day everyone!

Video has no sound. Strangely, Joblo has the same video at youtube and it plays fine. Why not just link to that instead of forcing us to watch this piece of shit movie player? Anyway, my Great Uncle was a ball gunner on a B-17. Of course he was killed....Footage doesn't really show anything new. Plane flipping over and landing on the back of the other bomber, however, was a novel.

Thank you Paul

We haven't had a lot of WWII movies that were well done but I hope this changes the trend.

Really interesting

This movie seems to show an aspect of war we've seen hundreds of times on film but it felt like a fresh take to me. The visuals were stunning and it seemed like they hit the clostrofibic tone that a film like this woukd have. I would certainly give this a chance with the right cast and more insight on how they tell the story visually. Also, THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE PAUL, I never knew you were a veteran but thank you for your work to keep this country great and give lazy Schmoes like me the

Kudos
