HBO and George R.R. Martin in talks for a Game of Thrones prequel series

11.15.2016

I've thought about it, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't last long in George R.R. Martin's GAME OF THRONES universe. I'm not brave or strong enough to make it as a warrior, nor am I clever or cunning enough to make as a schemer, and I'm certainly too fat and lazy to make it as a common peasant.

But, honestly, that ability to be able to transport yourself into a fictional world is precisely what makes the fantasy genre so engrossing. And few are more engrossing than the sprawling epic universe in Martin's A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE series of books (of which GAME OF THRONES is based). And it seems HBO thinks so too.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Casey Bloys, HBO'S programming president, has confirmed that there have been talks with George R. R. Martin about a potential prequel spin-off series to the wildly popular GAME OF THRONES.

Holy shit-snacks, that's exciting news!

Now, obviously these are all early talks, and there's no guarantee anything will come of it. At the same time, though, there is such a rich history to Martin's world, and so many areas you could explore - from Robert's Rebellion, to the reign of the Targaryens, to even the First Men meeting the Children of the Forest. Although, there is the tiny fact that most prequels aren't great (*cough*PhantomMenace*cough*), so it'd make sense that Martin is a bit wary to commit right off the bat.

But what do you guys think? Would you like to spend more time in the GAME OF THRONES universe? And, how long do you think you'd last?

Extra Tidbit: Apparently the events of the Red Wedding were so traumatizing - even to Martin himself - that he wrote around the event in the book, making the Red Wedding the last thing he wrote in it.

Nah

I don't think so. I enjoy that the backstory remains just that: backstory. I didn't need the prequel Star Wars trilogy to appreciate the original trilogy...in fact, it kinda made it worse. I anticipate a similar reaction. You take away the mystery by showing too much in prequels.

I bet its based on the Dunk and Egg novellas. They're good, and actually important to the main plot. I'm hip to this news!

It would be easy to tell a story leading up to a bit of Kingslaying, but one powerful element of GoT is the mystery of where the damn story is heading.

I'm fine with throwing it far enough in the past that anything can happen.

The Dunk and Egg prequel novels are finished as far as I know. There's no extra writing GRRM needs to do for them to be adapted except signing a contract

Dunk and Egg

My guess is that this would be an adaptation of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which tells the story of a hedge knight named Duncan and his squire: Egg. It's set about 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones. However, I think Robert's Rebellion or the Targaryen Conquest would make for cool mini-series prequels.
