House Party (1990) Revisited: Comedy Movie Review

Reginald Hudlin‘s 1990 comedy House Party was a massive sleeper success in 1990. Launching the careers of hip hop duo Kid N’ Play into the mainstream, as well as Martin Lawrence and the late, great Robin Harris, it was one of the youth-oriented movies that helped put New Line Cinema on the map. It also launched the career of director Reginald Hudlin, whose follow-up would be the Eddie Murphy classic Boomerang. Now’s the time to take a step back and revisited this classic party flick with a killer soundtrack.

House Party is remembered today for the high-energy dance moves pulled off by the popular rap duo, Kid ‘n Play, aka Christopher Reid and Christopher Martin. But it’s a film that would achieve cult status for so much more than that, bringing the lives of black teenagers into the mainstream and launching the careers of a number of future stars, all gettin’ their groove on to one of the dopest hip-hop soundtracks ever assembled in a single movie. Oh, and the best dance battle of all-time, don’t let anybody tell you different.
