Strike Back below!
by: James Thoo Feb. 19, 2009

EW has published their list of 25 Greatest Active Film Directors and, well, I honestly doubt I could keep my big fat mouth shut if a team of Victoria's Secret Models were all giving me head in the strictest library in the world, so of course I have something to say about it. You can go and check the list out over HERE, but here is the top ten:

1. Steven Spielberg
2. Peter Jackson
3. Martin Scorsese
4. Christopher Nolan
5. Steven Soderbergh
6. Ridley Scott
7. Quentin Tarantino
8. Michael Mann
9. James Cameron
10. Joel and Ethan Coen

You know, I have so many problems with this list but I'll let you guys weigh in while I just say this: I can't believe that Jon Favreau is on this list and Park Chan Wook (OLDBOY), Terrence Malick (THE THIN RED LINE), Hayao Miyazaki (SPIRITED AWAY), Richard Linklater (BEFORE SUNSET), Kim Ji-Woon (THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD), Spike Lee (HE GOT GAME), Oliver Stone (PLATOON) and The Wachowskis (THE MATRIX) aren't. I mean, Favreau is one of my favourite people in Hollywood right now, hands down, but that just isn't right.

Source: EW

Extra Tidbit: Ok, fine, one more: how is PT Anderson so low?? That guy is top ten material.

It’s ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY!!!
It’s ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY; honestly, did you guys really expect a quality list? If you want to know why there’s something ridiculous on the list, or on any of their lists, the answer is: “It’s not just ridiculous, It’s Entertainment Weekly”

I agree with d00r, JC should be number one, he puts a movie out like every decade and it winds up being the shit. Come on everybody, True Lies was the shit, and you don't have to be a chick to like Titanic, that movie was awesome.

Why is Christopher Nolan in the top 10? OMG!!! I would totally without any hesitation put a handful of directors above him, to name a few, Del Toro, Soderbergh, Cameron, Fincher, and Boyle. They're a lot more i would throw before, i just don't think he deserves that much recognition, when the ones above have actually won Oscars. Memento was the shit though, but i think #4 is saying he's better ...

TOP 50
Well I looked at ew.com a few days ago and they did have it as a top 50 active directors, and many of those you mentioned were in it. But I guess they just changed it to 25.

First and foremost, where is Sam Mendes?

Secondly, James Mangold deserves a spot.

But for the most part they got it right. Especially including Greengrass. PTA should have been higher though.

Scorsese should at least be number 2. I don't see why Peter Jackson should be before him just because of Lord of the Rings. Its not like the guy directed Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, or Goodfellas or anything like that.

How is everyone clamoring for favreau to be off the list, but Sam Raimi is 15th and no one notices? I wouldnt even say he is a good director. S2 was great, but he is a one-hit wonder. Put Mendes in place of him and Inarritu for Favreau and this list would actually be all right.

And dont say Snyder doesnt deserve this because that dude is amazing at what he does.

I'm probably just gonna repeat what others have said, but here I go:

- Take out of the list Favreau and Snyder

And then you are left with a long list of directors who could take their place like:

Spike Lee, Spike Jonze, Sam Mendes, Alfonso Cuaron, Tom Tykwer, Zhang Yimou, Terence Malick, Cameron Crowe and many many more

how is peter jackson above scorsese ? soderbergh & nolan in the top five, really ? i think the nolan submission is rigged considering the rag is a part of Time Warner. hell they were probably itching to give Stiller # 6 where's PTA, Copola, Fincher ? this list just proves my point that EW hasnt been a quality magazine since the turn of the millenium.

And I thought that trilogy-meter was lame...
Godawful list from a godawful website/magazine. The sole presence of Jon "Hack Pack" Favreau negates every cred the higher ranking names could bring; how come a mediocre action comedy (starring RDJ, but still...) and an unfunny christmas flick can hide the fact that he's a whore more interested in rubbing the fanboys the right way with his BS MySpace page than displaying some integrity? Okay, the more I think about it, the more that list bugs me. Here's who I feel should have been on it. It took me about 20 minutes to come up with (although I'm sure it'd take much longer to rank).

In alphabetical order:

- Pedro Almodovar
- Paul Thomas Anderson
- Darren Aronofsky
- Danny Boyle
- James Cameron
- Joel & Ethan Coen

Peter Jackson doesn't even deserve to be on that list, let alone at number 2.

P.T.A. should be right alongside Scorsese, Spielberg and the Coens. Behind the likes of the hack ZACK SNYDER??? That dude really doesn't belong on the list.

I know things like this are subjective, but this is a terrible, terrible list, for shame EW.

PT Anderson is top #1 material in my book - easily the best director working today I think, I can understand why Spielberg is number one based on his whole body of work - but his usual high standards have dipped slightly with his last few films (Indiana Jones & The KOTCS, Munich, War Of The Worlds, The Terminal) - although Lincoln, if it does ever get made, should see him make a return to form

First and Foremost...Spielberg is No.1 were he so rightly deserves to be! No question! there are a few other faults with the list, Fincher should be alot higher, Jackson alot lower, but as a whole, pretty damn good list!

So Judd Apatow places five spots higher than Clint Eastwood?
Akiralives, the first thing I thought when I finished the list was "Where the f*** is Sideny Lumet?" Glad to see that someone else noticed that too.

Personally, I don't know if everybody Thoo listed deserves to be on the list, after all this is a top 25, so there's only so many spots available, but I'd say Mallick, Miyazaki, and Lee for sure. I really love Favreau's stuff but it'...

My personal favorite director is James Cameron, and my second favorite director is John Carpenter.

Meh
Favreau, Raimi and Apatow (yeah I said it), are all pretty overrated.
I wonder if they realize that Sidney Lumet, Robert Zemekis and Jonathan Demme are still making movies?

This is such a hard list to do, let alone get it right. It's impossible, just like a list for best movies, best actors or best actresses. There are just too many of each to make a fair list.

ehk.. now that's a screwed up list, and, in my personal opinion, Jon Favreau is massively, frighteningly overrated.

I'm not going to comment on this list, but will, in fact, pretty much guarantee that there will not be one post on this article with someone stating "They pretty much got it right!"
