Exclusive Cool Video: Gay & Queer as used in classic movies

07.14.2014

As the march of gay equality marches on, we here at JoBlo.com are taking a look WAY back at the days when the terms 'gay' and 'queer' had a far different meaning in older movies, ranging from the Roaring '20s to the Swinging '70s. It's always interesting to see how different words or phrases may change meaning and/or usage over time and this is certainly no exception. If nothing else it's a compelling look into the past as we charge into the future. I'm sure our own kids will look back at some of the terms we commonly use today with equal parts disgust, humor, and disbelief. How times change, eh?

Have a gay ol' time!:

Did this really have to be 16 minutes for what is basically an old elementary school joke? No thanks.

I thoroughly enjoyed that. I always felt queer got unfairly re-appropriated as being strictly another word for homosexual. There was one line from The Family Way which felt almost like a bridge between the old usage of the word gay and the new.

Yep, interesting in terms of usage, but does this really make it a 'Cool Video'?

You just upload any old tosh you see on the internet, don't you Paul?
