Javier Bardem still wants to play Frankenstein’s Monster

Once upon a time, Javier Bardem was set to play Frankenstein’s Monster in the Dark Universe franchise. Universal had big plans for a cinematic universe revolving around the classic Universal Monsters, but the failure of Tom Cruise’s The Mummy brought those grand designs crashing down. That seemed to spell the end of Javier Bardem’s time as one of cinema’s most iconic monsters, but there have been rumblings that he could play the creature once again in the Bride of Frankenstein reboot being scripted by David Koepp

Javier Bardem addressed those Frankenstein rumours while speaking on The Jess Cagle Show on SiriusXM and while he said that he’s not involved in this latest reboot, he would still love to play the creature.

I haven’t heard anything about it, so I don’t know what’s the state of that. Me personally, I would love to play Frankenstein. Actually, I would like to play both — Dr. Frankenstein and Frankenstein the monster. Because it’s the dichotomy and the contradiction of one… the same being. But I don’t know if that’s going to be the case or not. As far as I know, it’s not happening.

Javier Bardem joked that he had the perfect head size to play Frankenstein, and the only other actor who could do Frankenstein would be Josh Brolin. “He has the same size head as me,” Bardem said. “I don’t know who else can do that. With some screws in our forehead, it could work, absolutely.” Speaking of large craniums, the actor spoke about a humorous moment during the shooting of No Country for All Men. “When we were doing No Country for All Men, there was a moment where Josh looked at us, and it was Tommy Lee Jones, him, and I,” Bardem said. “And we never shared the screen together. And Josh said, ‘No wonder we can’t share the screen. These are the three biggest heads in cinema history. You can’t put those three heads together in one frame.’ It was like, yeah, right, that’s why the Cohens didn’t put us together.

Javier Bardem can currently be seen starring alongside Nicole Kidman in Being the Ricardos, Aaron Sorkin’s drama peeking behind the scenes of the classic sitcom I Love Lucy. You can check out a review of the film from our own Chris Bumbray right here.
