Morbius began its box office journey last night and if its Thursday night preview total matches another comic book movie adaptation, it could exceed box office expectations this weekend.

Morbius grossed $5.7 million in Thursday night previews that began at 4:00 PM at 3,583 theaters including Imax and PLF auditoriums, per Deadline. The figure is just under the $5.9 million that Shazam! grossed on its preview night back on April 5, 2019. That film went on to open to $53.5 million so if Morbius follows a similar trajectory, it will exceed its tracking by a significant margin.

I predicted a $45 million opening for Morbius while tracking and Sony is calling it for $33 million. A lot of where the movie is going will be based solely on word of mouth. Critics hated the film with the Sony effort scoring a 15% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. That being said, moviegoers aren’t critics and they could turn Morbius into a hit despite the putrid reviews. According to Deadline, Morbius played at a fan screening on Wednesday night at the Playa Vista Cinemark, which saw an appearance by Leto, and it scored big with the crowd there. This could very well be a film for the general public that is just hungry for something fun on the big screen.

What are YOUR thoughts on Morbius’ box office prospects this weekend?
