The Nintendo Playstation is a thing that very much exists

Here at JoBlo we strive to provide give you guys the most up to date, insightful, and interesting news in the world of movies and television. While obviously things like the MCU, STAR WARS, Game of Thrones, and Stranger Things are our bread and butter, we recognize the importance of gaming culture. As such we created JoBlo Gaming a few months ago which you can check out here.

All of this is just a really bloated preamble to justify what I'm about to tell you guys. Namely that we've apparently stepped into some weird Rick and Morty dimension where the Nintendo Playstation exists. That's right you heard me correctly: a Nintendo Playstation. How can this Frankenstein/Resident Evil video game horror exist? Well I'm glad you asked.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s Sony and Nintendo were apparently partnering on a gaming system that would have combined Super Nintendo games with a CD format. The device went through a multitude of various names, everything from the Super NES CD-ROM, to SNES-CD, to the Nintendo Playstation. Obviously this potentially ground breaking system never came to be, and Sony eventually split off from Nintendo to create their first original console in 1995. However, several hundred prototypes were made and one of those prototypes recently made its way into the hands of gaming aficionado Terry Diebold.

Since acquiring the Nintendo Playstation, Diebold has made the rounds to various gaming events, showcasing this rare piece of videogame esoterica. However, due to the cost prohibitive nature of this, Diebold has finally decided to give up the system – for a price. That's right, come February 7, 2020 you can bid on the Nintendo Playstation courtesy of Heritage Auctions, which you can check out right here. However, if you're thinking $100 is going to cut it think again. Terry Diebold has already turned down a $1.2 million offer from a buyer in Norway so chances are the cost of owning this videogame oddity is going to be pricey.

Lest you think you'll only be getting a very expensive paper weight for your investment, fear not. The Nintendo Playstation plays SNES cartridges and Diebold had the CD-ROM modified so that it can now play several games.

So what do you guys think about the Nintendo Playstation? Do you wish it would have been released for mass consumption? Would you bid on this item? Sound off in the comments below!
