Will Johnny Depp and Tim Burton be reteaming for the umpteenth time on the upcoming Disney film ALICE IN WONDERLAND? That's the hot rumor currently circulating around the web. I've seen it on a variety of sites and none of them seem to indicate where the news came from so it could very well be made up. But given their history, it's not out of the question that Burton could bring Depp aboard to play The Mad Hatter. While we're huge Depp/Burton fans here at JoBlo.com, let's hope this is just a rumor. For one, the guys mined similar territory with CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. For two, that would turn ALICE into A Johnny Depp Film, when really that's not what it's about. But if they could do it in more of a performance capture Gollumesque manner, then maybe it'd be interesting (ya know, if it didn't really look like Johnny Depp at all). As I said before, this is just a rumor (albeit one that's spreading quickly), so let's wait and see before we go making any rash judgments. For more on Burton's ALICE including a look at his lead actress, check out our report from last week.

COMING SOON!

Extra Tidbit: Whatever Depp does it couldn't hold a candle to Tom Petty's legendary performance as The Mad Hatter.

maybe too much
depp is oversaturating himself right now in too small of an area. I guess what I mean by that is all of the characters he plays are so similar now. I really wasn't feeling him as willy wonka. that movie was a wreck. i used to love depp, but now he's just become so overused and overrated i dont really care anymore. i think the last film he was decent in was the first pirates. and before that...

Nolan could work Mad Hatter into his universe. I like him better than Riddler. Depp could play him well. Id rather see MIchael Clarke Duncan as Bane though...As for Alice in Wonderland. I kinda figured Depp would be in there somewhere. Good lord man Hey Depp?? WHy dont you share your talent with some others huh?

Sheesh, Mike....for a moment there I thought you were referring to Batman's nemesis....got me startled for a moment! Anyway....Depp would do great as The Riddler...he's probably the only one besides Bane who'd make a worthy follow-up to The Joker.

Burton has sucked for so long... file this under who gives a shit. I agree that Depp should actually play a normal human in a movie for once. and no more fake british accents! And Burton, how about throwing some nonwhites in your films. It's a big world. I mean, besides Michael Clarke Duncan in an ape suit. we're starting to think you're a bigot.

I too was fooled into thinking this was about batman. Glad its not, mad hatter would be a weak follow up to the joker, even if it was depp.

I'm a big Batman fan, but the first thing that pops into my mind when I hear Johnny Depp is Tim Burton. So they're good friends, we know already. Can't they just work without each other a little more often? BTW, I think Timothy Spall would be the perfect Mad Hatter, face and all.

Wow, Keaton would be a damn good idea. There's an actor I'd love to see in a big project again.

Yes, bring back Michael Keaton! A very underrated actor. He needs to be in more movies! Especially good ones!!

Thank God this isn't about batman
That's what I thought at first too. Good things it's not. Mad Hatter is a stupid Batman villain and Johnny Depp has no place in Nolan's movies. Seriously, I'm sick of hearing his name thrown around for every part ever imagined (the same could be said about Christian Bale, no matter how great they are). And yes, bring back Keaton!

BRING BACK MIKE !! (KEATON)
Burton needs to throw some projects towards Michael Keaton. The man helped put both of them on the map with BEETLEJUICE & BATMAN. Its was like Scorsese & DeNiro for the Midnight Cinema crowd. Only this DeNiro (Keaton) fell off the map while Scorsese (Burton) flounders in barely watchable coherent films. The whole Deep pairing is getting slightly irksome. Whoever mentioned Tom...

Whoever mentioned Tom Waits, that would be fucking awesome ! He should also contribute to a soundtrack.

Let it be lies, lies, lies. It's time for Depp to do a drama. No bloody singing barbers, no wacky pirates, no crazed choco man. . .just Depp, gritty, playing a role in a fucking drama. Over-the-top Depp is so over for me.

The Depp/Burton pairing is getting pretty tired. At this point it feels like studios turn to Burton to give their unoriginal films an "edge" and Burton merely turns to Depp to give said film some credibility.

Awesome extra tidbit. Petty will always be the Mad Hatter to me; what a great video. But Depp and HBC would be perfect in this (and considering it's Burton, is it really that much of a stretch that it could happen?)

Come ON Hollywood
Regardless of the good things they have done together, Im completely over the Depp/Burton pairing. Whats next? His wife in a Queen of Diamonds fatsuit? or maybe she'll branch out and play his Cheshire Cat?! didnt see that coming at all... Enoughs enough work with some different talent man. Like say, John Hurt as Mad Hatter. Kinda hard to knock Tom Waits/Ron Pearlman I gotta agree with that.

Cool!
Maybe Chris Carter could do some guest writing on this and turn the Mad Hatter into a corpse stealing gay Russian? Of course, I'm just joking. I think that Depp would make a great Mad Hatter!!

Makes sense to me, as soon as I heard Tim Burton was doing it Depp was the only person I thought of for The Mad Hatter. This isn't surprising, but it's still welcome. I'm guessing Helena Bonham Carter will probably be cast as the Queen of Hearts, which would be cool

Oops...
When I first saw the headline to this story, I thought this was an early speculation to the next Batman villain, then it turns out it's actually about Alice In Wonderland. Huh...who woulda' thunk it? A little dissapointed I have to say about it not being Batman news.
