Transformers pics! Aug. 18, 2006

Wrapping up what seems to be the 1st Annual TRANSFORMERS Day at JoBlo.com are some bitchin' new pics of some of our favorite Transformers including Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Ratchet. These were apparently first posted to the forums at IMDB and later at Flickr and it's not clear where they originated from but they look pretty damn real. I can say that because two of the pics come from scenes of the movie - the Transformer encased in ice and the Autobots in Sam's backyard. It's pretty cool stuff and nice to see a fully formed non-CGI Transformer (God, that thing is HUGE!). I do have some nitpicks abou the design, most obviously the flames on Prime. What is everyone here thinking? I kinda wish some of these pics were available BEFORE the chat today... Thanks to Andrew for the heads up.

As an aspiring director, all i can say about this movie is that this is another typical example of how directors that dont know or like the original content are allowed to direct movies that hold more than just a place in peoples heart. I am a transformers fan and when i heard micheal bay was directing , i expected more from him than this. he has literally changed it to suit himself. There are a couple of things that you have to keep in the transformers universe (especially if you gloting that you are doing it for the fans and its faithfull to the generation 1)
1. optimus is a red truck and flat front ( how can you give an excuse as weak as " i chose the long nose version because when transforming its more efficient and believable" , im sorry but that is weak , specially with modern cgi animation , modeling, and rendering)
2. ratchet is an ambulance. jesus ! if you wanted to change certain aspects of the film to applease fans and grow the franchise , you wouldnt make the mistakes your making here ! yes, you dont have to have everything the same as the cartoon , would it be so hard to maybe make ratchet into a modern abulance, or make starscream into a modern f22. if you dont want to keep the old 80's look which made fans happy. there are compramises to everything.
3. Megatron stays as a gun ! if you come out with the excuse that you cant because its not believable then you are just not a good director. you can make anything look good , its a visual medium.
... most of all you keep story elements the same , its a war fought by two oposing factions that land on earth millions of years ago ! im sure bay can make explosions , and great car crashes ! , but so can any director. i agree with some of the fans that are dissapointed. Whoever gave the comment that bay is the only directory possible to make this movie, then he is intilted to his opinion but he clearly doesnt watch that many movies, have you ever heard or peter jackson, jame cameron !!!! , and if anyone says you cant always stay to the same story excuse ! well i guess you havnt watch Lord of the Rings (big block buster movie , 2nd in world wide gross only to titanic ! which was made by non other than james cameron) is it so hard to just for a moment and think that maybe the reason why transformers cartoon and the recent transformers line of comics from g1 were such a sucess is because they kept the original story !!!! , why change whats already fantastic? clearly here we dont have any valid excuse for whats happened. and if you defend the changes then you need to look at it objectivly as a person. if your going to make a transformers movie based on characters from G1 , you dont change character designs like whats been done, you dont change story development, you clearly dont change character arch, AND YOU DONT ADD DECEPTICONS THAT WHERE NEVER IN G1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! , micheal bay , i have lost respect for you as a director and i wont see the movie if when i see a trailer (not a crappy teaser that a kid can make with a home camcorder) it looks like whats been seen so far. And as a fan i urge whoever says they love transformers and or even has alittle respect for it ,then not to see it . yes , i have said it. because anyone can make cool explosions with cars and planes and tanks but only a great director and or a fan can make something true to the original story . REMEMBER What Bay said " i was never an original fan , but i love vehicles "

Oh MicahelAlan24, if only you were right. Unfortunately, that is Optimus. Although, if those were decepticons I be even more worried about this film. I think me and realhorrorshow are on the same page with this film, the more we hear and think about it, the bigger a disaster this film seems to be. I think Flames are the least of our worries any more.

I was a big fan of Transformers back in the day. A fan, not a fanatic. I couldn't care less if Optimus Prime has flames on him as a truck. After all it's just a truck and I've seen tons of them that look just like it. That's not what's important anyway...let's see him transformed and in action, then we can crit.

The real weakness to Bay's directing is that he uses stereotypical characters that develop over arcs that we've seen too often (A B-grade film with an A-grade gloss)...but man can he do intense destructive action! Which is exactly what a movie about giant robots rampaging across the face of the earth should have.

If I wanted something more cerebral I'd watch something else.

besides creasy's failed attempt at the english language i could decipher that he said michael bay is the "only director" that could make this?

god bless the animatorguy he's absolutley right about everything. i would take any one of those directors at 25% of their potential over bay. peter jackson's transformers? come on now that would be amazing.

i just kept thinking about it and this movie is inevitably going to be pushed over the edge to those "nonfans" studios often worry about. after seeing the director, the cast, the teaser, and now the pictures i am officially throwing in the towel before every hope i have is dashed.

While it's not the Optimus that most of us know and love.. and recognize. There was a version of Optimus that this is quite close to.
Search Google for Laser Optimus Prime... or Battle Convoy.

Creasy, you really think Michael Bay is the "ONLY" director who could make this film? Really? Not even James Cameron, or Steven Spielberg, or Ridley Scott, or Peter Jackson, or Sam Raimi, or Alex Proyas, Paul Verhoven, or Bryan Singer? Bay is the ONLY? The problem is, and Michael Bay has said it himself, he's not a fan of the show, but he does like cars!!! That's a big problem, as Transformers needs to be as much about the characters and story as it is about big robots that can turn into cars. I'm excited as hell abot this movie, but so far the evidence provided gives me a few fears. Excuse me while I go ring 11111111111. Wah?

Is it that big of deal? Being in Western Arkansas where there is a large number of trucking companies (not to mention Wal-Mart and Tyson). I've seen this before, it's only cosmetic.

I'm so divided on this film! Part of me is still hyped and excited about it, but then the other part of me realises that they screwed up the one thing that they had to get right, the look of Optimus. I'm thrilled that Peter Cullen is back as the voice, but look at that truck, that's not Optimus, that's his retarded hick cousin!! Flames??? I read a interview with Michael Bay, where he mentioned that they went with a long nosed truck (instead of the classic flat nosed) for Optimus as there's no way he would be able transform into a robot with all the right parts without the long nose. Wah? Last time I checked my old Optimus and my 20th Anniversary Optimus both successfully change from a truck to a robot without any "questionable parts missing". My greatest fear is that they are aiming this movie at Fast & the Furious fans (Bumblebee a suped up Camaro?!?), and nothing against those films, but the Transformers movie should not be Fast & the Furious 4!!! God I hope I'm dead wrong.

Yeah Im not sure about the flames on Optimus also, but maybe thats just how they want to get both the red and the blue in there. Other than that I think it all looks pretty cool. I'm down.
