... give Dylan a biopic!
by Sturdy

I’m sick of talking and hearing about WOLVERINE, so I wanted to get in touch with my musical side this week. And what better time to bring up the subject of a Bob Dylan movie than a week after his latest album hit shelves? I’ve been a Dylan fan for a few years now, but I didn’t even realize that he’s had 33 albums so far. Most artists are lucky to have 2 or 3 and he’s had 33. But even though he’s still pushing out great music, now’s a good time to make a biopic on one of the most iconic musicians to ever live.

There are plenty of obstacles, however. Dylan is notoriously secretive and goes to great lengths to keep his private life private. Heck, he even took out a lawsuit before FACTORY GIRL came out because he disputed the claims the film made about him. Even though they had several sworn statements from people saying the events were basically true. So if he’s going to dispute such a minor event in his life, getting a whole film about him would seem near impossible, at least without his involvement (another obstacle). But for the purpose of this article, let’s just assume he would sign off on a biopic. Whether or not he ever would could be debated forever.

Parts were great, parts were meh.

In 2007, I’M NOT THERE was released and some Dylan fans have said that’s as close as you’re going to get to a Dylan biopic, at least while he’s still alive. I liked I’M NOT THERE, if for no other reason than it opened me up to some Dylan songs I wasn’t familiar with. But it was also a good film, even if it was a little all over the place. But it didn’t satisfy my desire to see a Dylan biopic ala WALK THE LINE or RAY. But in some sense, maybe an artsy, eclectic movie like I’M NOT THERE is the only biopic that could do Dylan justice.

He could have done worse.

So I guess the big question is who would play Dylan on the big screen. Hayden Christiansen played him, I mean “Billy Quinn” in FACTORY GIRL and…don’t laugh…I thought he did pretty well. He captured his mannerisms, at least in the footage we’ve seen in DON’T LOOK BACK and NO DIRECTION HOME. But I think the obvious answer is that it would have to be an unknown. I think Dylan would be an extremely tough role for any actor today, especially since it would have to span at least 40 years.

Good music documentary

I love music biopics and it’s rare that we see a bad one. There are a lot of musicians I’d like to see portrayed on the big screen (still want to see that Beatles movie). But for his fans, Bob Dylan is more than just a musician. It’s hard to explain, but if you’re not familiar with his music, then go buy ‘Blood on the Tracks’ and thank me later.

Anybody notice how much Adam Sandler looked like Bob Dylan in Reign on Me? There is no way in hell I am suggesting Adam Sandler for the job but damn it he looked like Dylan's twin! Would love to see a Dylan biopic! Focus on mid 50's to mid 70's with a touch at the end on the rest. How about a Zep biopic or someday a Guns N' Roses biopic? I'm sure both will come some day!

Many movies have done an excellent transition from one characters past persona/image to the next. although not as many as we would see for Bob. With that it would make for a longer movie.
Look at walk the line and coal miners daughter. i felt the character transition was fantastic. only problem would be the difficulty with the amount of imagery from Bob. If it doesn't zone in on each individual one for so long and make it not feel so segregated from the others and flow them together..bingo.

I'm not sure we need a straight-up bio-pic, and I'm fairly satisfied with what we got. But here's an idea, since there's probably a bunch of actors, known and unknown, who could pass for the man at least a little (Adam Sandler's one of them). Eschew the "I'm Not There" format of different names and storylines, and just use different actors to portray the various eras of his life. Similar-looking, but different. The man's got an image. Unlike most musicians, though, his image is that he's always changing, always refining himself, gaining and losing fans as he goes. And it would be in keeping with some of his philosophical beliefs.

Now, finding enough actors who bear enough similarities to play him through all those years would be tough. By all means, don't just make it about his heyday with folk music and his British tour in the '60s. That stuff's got documentaries that are better already.

An inherent problem to this is that they kinda did that with "I'm Not There," except half those actors didn't look a thing like him, and most of them told stories that were only vaguely suggestive of his own life.

Dylan's poetry has made such a historic impact that it wouldn't be right to not have a correct film to look back on. He's an ingenious messenger that i am forever grateful for.

Ugh." This is absolutely wrong.
I would love to see a good Bob Marley biopic based off of the biography 'Catch a Fire'.

the persona(s) he's created are so fragmented that you'd never be able to pull it off with out making the character schizophrenic; you would have to be a beatnik, an outlaw, a black man, a Jew for Jesus, and that just the first hour. Which I think is why IMNOT worked so well by weaving in and out of various periods in his life with various characters representing Dylan as a whole. That's the beauty of the man; a modern artist, he's an enigma to his fans and public, ya never know what your going to get.

Ugh.
Biopics are for people who don't want to listen to someone's entire library and learn about the artist the best way possible. It's an easy connection for a viewer to become a "fan" Because lets face it, this biopics are only made to sell "great hits" and "The Best of..." albums.

And "Don't Look Back" is hardly a music documentary. It's documenting the boredom of a young man who is encouraged and allowed to "push boundaries"

I can't believe I'm standing up for Dylan, but just buy his music listen to it. Like or or hate it, (just because he's an Icon doesn't mean you have to like it) and leave the poor fella alone.
