Gimli Top

Fans of The Ring who'd like to see John Rhys-Davies back for THE HOBBIT will be left disappointed: the actor won't get downsized again for the prequel, and not for a lack of being invited.

Talking to Empire recently, Davies says he was politely offered to play Gimli's father Gloin but felt one dwarf was enough for him. "It was just a gentle "What would you feel about putting it on again?" But no," he confesses. "There's a sentimental part of me that would love to be involved again. Really I am not sure my face can take that sort of punishment any more."

Davies was given a bit of free reign in the RINGS trilogy as he was the only Dwarf portrayed, but the new project has 13 of 'em. "When you've been 1 of 1, why would you want to be 1 of 13?"

A return to middle earth isn't completely out of the question though, saying he'd be up to play something different like an Elf, if ever offered. But really, when you've played a walking tree, what else is there to accomplish?...

Extra Tidbit: He would make a fine ZZ Top, wouldn't he?

I don't blame him
Anyone who saw the extras on the LOTR DVDS could see just how much he suffered in reaction to the makeup for the last one. I wouldn't want to do it again, and there are others that can play Dwarf roles. He is Gimli, he can leave it at that.

:(
I can't believe he's not coming back. He played that dwarf really great. Whoever they pick as Glóin better be worthy.

As Approverman said
his reaction to the makeup was really bad. He did a Q&A in Australia last year and told the whole story. He loved being involved in the films but it was the least enjoyable film shoot he had ever done. I got to talk with him for like 5 minutes too, he spent the whole time asking me questions. Nice guy.

Not trying to be douchey here, but ZZ Top isn't one of the band members, it's just the name of the band.

Good
I love everything Lord of the Rings but the portrayal of Gimli in the films was probably the thing i liked least. Also it seems it would just be distracting and confusing to people if he played his own father.

I can see why...
If you watch the special features on LOTR, you will see that he is actually allergic to the makeup they use to attach the skin. Apparently it was really bad.

bummer
Hmmmm..... I don't quite know what to make of this news. It sucks that he doesn't want to come back. It's kinda weird that he wouldn't want to do it again. I'm thinking we haven't heard the whole story. Maybe they weren't willing to pay him enough.

This is John Rhys-Davies we are talking about. The guy isn't immune to making "any old shit" by any stretch of the imagination. He was in Anaconda 4 ffs!
