Last night, in another effort to bring AVATAR to the masses, long-running news program "60 Minutes" ran a feature on director James Cameron and his upcoming film. I've embedded the entire 12:43 segment that aired last night below and if you head to the "60 Minutes" site, you can see a few "web extras" on AVATAR including Cameron talking about who he thinks is the target audience for the film (ummm, I think he's talking about YOU). If I do go see it...
...it will actually be the first 3D mainstream movie I have seen (other than the pirate thing at Sea World several years ago). It seems that there would be enough razzmatazz up on screen to make it worth the extra price, and the discomfort to an eyeglass wearer like myself. I know, I know, get my eyes lasered already....

unlikely to flop
chances are, if the 3D is as "amazing" as everyone who has seen it claims it is, then avatar will not flop. It might not do as good as hoped opening weekend, but I suspect word of mouth will keep the movie going strong. Plus it's James Fucking Cameron, so you know the movie is gonna be good too!

I'm still unsure why people would doubt Cameron. I mean his track record is incredible! He really has yet to make a terrible film. I always think of the doubters before Titanic came out and how stupid they must've felt afterward. Don't wanna be one of those guys. I wanna believe this will be all it's cracked up to be. Plus you got to make your hero likable to the popcorn eating american movie crowd. Screenwriting 101 dude. Whether you like it or not doesn't change the fact that his films are almost always groundbreaking. He doesn't even make a movie unless he feels it has the ability to kick ass. He's not doing it for the money man he's doing it to further cinema's potential and that is totally respectable. Piranha 2 doesn't count. Would you like people judging your filmmaking potential from a film you made for Roger Corman with no real budget? All we are saying is give Cameron a chance!

PS. I should warn you that I also faithfully defended Transformers 2 and the Spirit before they came out so...uh....yeah...:)

Same reason people doubt Lucas or Spielberg (the latter who I personally don't doubt), just because he was good once, doesn't mean he hasn't gone mental. People change, especially after they have success and become surrounded by yes men.

I was never a fan of "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "True Lies" was misogynist crap. The less said about "Titanic" the better.

Let's face it, Cameron has never been a deft hand at relationship drama ("There are two candles in the dark, Bud") but for awhile there in the 80s he had...

Let's face it, Cameron has never been a deft hand at relationship drama ("There are two candles in the dark, Bud") but for awhile there in the 80s he had a pretty good handle on action sci-fi. "The Abyss" marked a turning point in his career. While it was interesting and a pretty good flick, it's still rather heavy-handed and often silly.
"Terminator 2: Judgment Day," which, for some reason, everyone is ga-ga over, is a tepid remake of his far superior original. A touchy-feely Terminator? I don't think so. This is where his weakness as a screenwriter really shows through. Over the years, the action becomes quite boring because unlike the unhinged and out of time Kyle Reese, you knew nothing was going to affect Arnold's Terminator. Let's not even mention the abysmal ending (thumbs up, everyone!)

I hope that it is a good movie but buy watching the trailers I get a Dances with wolves type movie set in a wonderful backdrop.

It looks very promising but as someone said this could be a gigantic flop too. If it costs $400 million+ and doesn't bank that back than good luck Mr. Cameron on making another film or convincing studioheads and the general public 3D is the way to go.

Personally, when I hear a filmmaker saying 3D is the next step in the evolution of filmmaking I fear we'll no longer need actors ...

Personally, when I hear a filmmaker saying 3D is the next step in the evolution of filmmaking I fear we'll no longer need actors anymore, sets, crews, etc. but just artificial intelligence doing the work which would then show that Cameron and George Lucas are the real terminators of the world whom rather spend their time obsessively grueling with a computer then delivering real, fleshed-out performances.

i'm concerned with that fear too. but there will always be a backlash to "the standard." if CGI and 3D is the way to go for blockbusters, there will be responses with more traditional film

When I hear a filmmaker say that 3D is the next step in the evolution of filmmaking, I think to myself, "Again? Didn't we go through this already in the 50's? Then again in the 80's?"

3D has been and always will be a desperate ploy to shore up box office receipts. I have very little interest in 3D. It really adds nothing to a film.

if New Moon does better than Avatar...
Then there is no hope left, Skellington. I will probably see it in 3d theaters 2 or 3 times, this one is worth it. Even the story looks cool, but the visuals are otherwordly.

Even the greatest movies, I only see them once in theatre. I dont see why Id see this one more than once.

Am I the only one that thinks this will be the biggest flop in movie history. I have no interest in seeing it whatsoever when it comes out, it basically looks like a futuristic pocohantas, which is stupid

Skellington. I'm not quite sure how you came to that conclusion from Drummer's comments above. In fact, he asks (quite clearly, I might add) "Am I the ONLY ONE who THINKS this will be the biggest flop in movie history." (Emphasis added)

Nowhere in his post does he say that because he is not interested it would be a flop.
