Movie Jail: This week's defendant is...Mickey Rourke!

09.01.2014

Movie Jail

This is Movie Jail, a unique maximum security prison that houses some of the worst writers, directors, actors and producers from Hollywood and beyond. Their crimes? The offenses vary from convict to convict but most of these inmates have contributed negatively to the film world to some capacity and his or her misdeeds have covered a long enough period of time that the authorities had to intervene. In each column a defendant is put on trial, arguments are made, and then it is up to YOU, the jury, to decide if the person is guilty or not guilty of crimes against cinema. Their lives are in your hands, dude.

The Defendant

The Case

The Prosecution: Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Java Heat, Dead in Tombstone, The Courier, Immortals, Passion Play, 13, The Informers, Killshot, Stormbreaker, Domino, Picture Claire, Get Carter, Shades, Point Blank, Thursday, Another 9/12 Weeks, Double Team

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, Mickey Rourke received rave reviews for The Wreslter (which helped complete his comeback after retiring from boxing), however the prosecution hasn't been impressed with many of his most recent films. Mr. Rourke gave it his all in the Darren Aronofsky flick, and it paid off big time, but lately it seems like he has been coasting.

The prosecution didn't believe Mr. Rourke was going to suddenly become one of those actors who chases awards after receiving so many nominations for his performance in The Wrestler, but we also didn't think he would still be starring in crap below his talent. What the hell is he doing appearing in films like Dead in Tombstone, The Courier and Java Heat? Critics didn't completely hate his Black November, however they didn't love it either. One movie critics did despise though was his Passion Play, and even Mr. Rourke has commented about how it's terrible film. The actor may have chewed scenery like a pro in Immortals and Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, but like most of his other movies as of late, neither film received excellent reviews.

Maybe the reason why Mr. Rourke has trouble finding great roles is because he is still a little rough around the edges. The prosecution might appreciate his no bullshit attitude, but we doubt it has actually helped his career. Mr. Rourke was fantastic in The Expendables, however his behavior was reportedly one of the reasons why he didn't return for the sequels. While the actor has given a lot of credit to his agent for his comeback, the prosecution isn't convinced he's done a great job managing Mr. Rourke's acting career since The Wrestler.

The prosecution still believes Mr. Rourke is a very talented actor and we don't want to lock him up forever, but we think sending Mr. Rourke to Movie Jail will do him some good. A few months in prison should be enough, and we'll even let him bring his dog.

The Defense: The Expendables, Iron Man 2, The Wrestler, Sin City, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Man on Fire, Spun, The Pledge, Animal Factory, The Rainmaker, Johnny Handsome, A Prayer for the Dying, Angel Heart, Barfly, 9 1/2 Weeks, Year of the Dragon, The Pope of Greenwich Village, Rumble Fish, Diner, Body Heat

Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Rourke's career may have peaked with The Wrestler, but that doesn't mean we should toss him in Movie Jail. He's still doing outstanding work, even in films that haven't received the best reviews from critics.

A perfect example is The Expendables, which is only at 41% at Rotten Tomatoes, however many had great things to say about my client's performance in the action movie. Although his Immortals is sitting at 35%, it's obvious Mr. Rourke had a blast as the villainous King Hyperion. Sure, some of the magic was gone from his Marv in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, but it's not his fault Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller waited nine f*cking years to make the sequel.

Instead of trying to lock my client up, the prosecution should show Mr. Rourke some respect. Maybe he hasn't appeared in the greatest movies lately, but he still has a ton of talent. My client might star in stuff that is below him to help pay the bills, but when Mr. Rourke finds a role or movie that really inspires him, you better watch the f*ck out.

As the prosecution points out, my client will occasionally ruffle a few feathers with his comments, however that's just how he is, and the defense will always love an actor who has no problem speaking the truth, or at least their honest opinion. Has it had a negative impact on his career? More than likely, but probably not nearly as much as the prosecution claims.

If Mr. Rourke was only appearing in direct-to-DVD or VOD stuff, then maybe the prosecution would have a case, but the defense just doesn't think he deserves to go to Movie Jail.

IN CLOSING...

What should we do with the former boxer? Do you think he needs to go to Movie Jail, or have you enjoyed his recent films? Do you believe he's in danger of letting his comeback go to waste, or do you think he's doing just fine with his career? Is Mickey Rourke GUILTY or NOT GUILTY?

COMMENT BELOW WITH YOUR VERDICT!

*The cases for and against a defendant going to Movie Jail by the author are not necessarily his views and opinions but they are some of the beliefs that one would use to effectively make an argument for both sides. Not quite a devil's advocate but you get the point. Anyways, this is all in fun so don't take it too seriously. We have a separate jail for those people called "Troll Tower" and believe me you do NOT want to go there.

WHAT SAY YOU, GUILTY OR NOT?

LAST WEEK'S VERDICT

Most of the jury was completely against the idea of Mel Gibson being considered for Movie Jail in last week's trial, and the actor has been found NOT GUILTY of all charges. Jury members said they thought it was insane Mr. Gibson was up for prison, and chewed the prosecution a new one for wanting to put him behind bars. They also said they can't wait for Mr. Gibson to direct another movie, and still think he's a fantastic actor.

PREVIOUS VERDICTS

You have to respect a dude who turned down Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cop but made Angel Heart, 9 1/2 Weeks, Year of the Dragon and Barfly. Then after he was left for dead, came back with Sin City and The Wrestler.

He was hardly in the first Expenables movie so I don't see how that can be a part of the defense. And for next week how about Randy Couture. I didn't realize he was in so many bad movies besides the expendables.

I didn't realize Mickey Roarke has made so many movies lately. He is completely changed from his 9/1 weeks/ Angel Heart days. I guess I have to say Not Guilty. I don't think he is a bad actor, nor do I think he is taking bad roles or making movies bad. There is something about him that screams at me "mailing it in" but then you see the transformation for the Wrestler and you KNOW he isn't mailing anything in. He became beefed up and transformed. I wouldn't stick him in movie jail, because he's an interesting character to have around Hollywood. There isn't really anyone else like him around these days and he brings an unusual edge to most of the films he appears in. Maybe he's had a career of missed opportunities and setbacks, but you never know when he's going to do something different and give us something cool. He's an unusual talent, and Hollywood kinda needs a few people like that.

Always find the guy has a bad attitude and is so full of himself... yet, I really do enjoy his acting for the most part, he's entertaining and can be quite versatile.

He's a great actor brought down by too many bad decisions as of late. But in his case, the good outweighs the bad.

Guilty. He's had a few good films, but he's been mostly doing DTV stuff for a while, and I don't see that changing.
How about David S Goyer next week?

I hate to say it but.......GUILTY!!!!!!!!

He is a truly great actor, I just wish he'd be more selective of the films he chooses to star/co-star in.
He was AMAZING in The Wrestler, but everything after that was meh to total shit.
Angel Heart is a steaming pile with its beat you over the head metaphors. But I will be the first to admit I need to track down and watch his earlier films. Something tells me he's one of those actors that can only play himself.
He was one of the most handsome leading men in Hollywood of the 80's but now

I never thought I'd say this:

In PASSION PLAY, Megan Fox's performance was better than Mickey's. Let that sink in for a moment. I'm not saying he's less talented than her, but there are so many movies where he sleepwalks through. Guess what: Just because you're doing it for the money, doesn't mean you can't put any effort. Look at Al Pacino. There's no way he thought "JACK" & "JILL" would be good, but he still gave it his all. He ended up saving the movie! To be fair, I doubt Mickey would've saved PASSION PLAY or IMMORTALS,

He was good in THE WRESTLER and SIN CITY 1, and he was a highlight in IRON-MAN 2 (a movie I'm not crazy about). But anyone could've played his characters in THE EXPENDABLES 1 and "13". There's also the problem with his attitude. Nobody puts a gun on him to keep starring in movies he doesn't want to. If he's desperate for money, he can do other gigs. He's Guilty.

Next week: How about Pierce Brosnan? 3 box office and critical failures in one year!

He is one hell of an actor and has done some great films. I love him as Marv. However, he has had two chances had a true comeback and has pissed them away because of his massive ego. He makes some really oddball decisions and then he talks about how much he didn't like the movie. If he did not like the script then why do the movie? He obviously did not have problem cashing those checks.

I printed out this article and wiped my ass with it.

How can you say "Thursday" is not a good movie. "Thursday" launched Thomas Jane'es career, plus (SPOILER) it's the only movie out there where a woman rapes a man. I have told many people to watch the movie "Thursday" and all of them said it was extremely entertaining. You never also never even listed one of Rourke's best movies which is the 1996 - "Bullet". I'm not for name calling, nor am I a troll but this article strikes me that is was written by a poser who is only reviewing IMDB pages. You

The Wrestler is the one performance from him that I truly liked and rightfully so, it's a damn good film. As an actor I have just never been a big fan. Hes ok, but he comes off as a huge prick especially when he bashed Immortals, a movie I still think is pretty damn cool, no thanks to him. On that note guilty, and lay off the botox bruv.

I was thinking of this recently. He had a comeback with the wrestler (wasn't Nic Cage originally gonna do that???), and was in a few big films like IM2. But really since IM2, he hasn't been in a theatrical film except for the recent Sin City. I'm leaving out Immortals, maybe another, and it's not even indie films that don't have much $ and go to VOD, he has mainly been in shit STV action movies

Guilty. There's no doubt that he's gifted and has had some great performances in his career. However, he is known to be an insufferable ass on the set and has burned so many bridges (especially with Iron Man 2), which has led to him being continually stuck in direct-to-DVD hell.

This is actually kind of hard for me. I love Mickey Rourke for his early work. And even a turd like the Get Carter remake was slightly better for having him in it. I also liked Immortals and Domino (an under-appreciated exercise in pure Tony Scott style), to say nothing of Sin City and The Wrestler, which are classics in my book. He's one of the last of the Brando-esque method actors who take their craft WAY too seriously, but he's also self-professed to be kind of lazy.

Mickey Rourke is his own worst enemy. I also think he's probably suffering from depression, but he's the best example of a squandered comeback since John Travolta twenty years ago. I wouldn't go for a long sentence, maybe even probation, but Rourke is better than the movies he's finding himself in. I just wish he'd realize that.

Probation. Yes he's turned in some great performances but he's also sleepwalked through a good number of duds and he often looks like he had to be dragged out of the trailer to be on the set that day.
